Wether or not Olivia answered, the warm, down-to-earth Blithe heiress the Westons thought they knew was already half ruined in front of them.

Sienna was hopping with rage beside them. “Why do you keep going after Olivia? We told you it was the staff’s fault. She didn’t put on your clothes because she wanted to.

“It’s one outfit. You split hairs over it and drag the whole house out of bed. Nora Sinclair, you are out of your…”

Nora’s hand moved before Sienna got the rest of it out.

The slap landed square on Sienna’s cheek, and the whole room froze.

Sienna was the only girl of her generation in the family, which meant she had been spoiled since the day she was born.

And now Nora had hit her.

Sienna’s shock burned off into fury and she screamed. “You hit me! How dare you! You’re not even family,

you…”

Nora’s hand came up and caught her twice more, one side and then the other.

“You scream my full name across a room and you talk over me. Where are your manners?

“I run this house now, so you answer to me. And yes, I hit you.

“Talk back one more time and you get another one.”

Marlene came out of her shock and started forward, furious. “Nora…”

“Enough!”

Constance struck her cane once against the floor, and the sound cut Marlene off mid-breath.

Marlene turned on her, outraged. “Mother, she’s been in this family three days and she’s already hitting Sienna. I’ve never once raised a hand to that girl.”

Constance looked at her. “You spoiled her into what she is. Sienna is entitled and rude, and Nora was right to correct her.

“If her own mother won’t teach her, the woman who runs this house will. That’s her job now, and she didn’t do anything wrong.”

Sienna’s cheek had come up red and swollen, and she had gone quiet and ducked in behind Marlene, whose eyes filled at the sight of it.

Constance cut her off, out of patience. “That’s enough. What is there to be angry about? You should be grateful Nora cares enough to correct her at all.

“If you can’t live with it, take your family and move off the estate. Then Sienna can be as rude and as stupid

as she likes somewhere Nora doesn’t have to hear it.”

ving off the estate was the last thing Marlene or her husband wanted, so she took hold of Sienna and puted her back into the crowd.

Constance let her voice drop and carry. “Nora married Julian, which makes her Mrs. Weston, and one day she will run this family the way I run it now.

“She’s not an outsider and she has a spine. I’m fine handing this house to her.”

She turned to Nora. “It’s late. Finish what you came down here to do and get to bed.”

With those few sentences, Constance handed her the household outright.

Nora nodded, looked out over the room, and let her voice go cold. “Every member of staff who touched my closet or Julian’s today is fired, and so is anyone related to them.

“They gave my things away without asking me.

“Julian is my husband. Someone in this house decided to dress him and another woman to match, and that is disrespect to me and to my marriage.

“You take $20,000 a month to do a job. If you can’t do it, somebody else will.

“We’re newlyweds, and that’s worth celebrating, so every one of you is getting a bonus tonight. Take it and be happy for us.”

She had humiliated Olivia and Sienna, fired the staff who had been bought off, and then paid the entire estate a bonus.

She had made an example of two people and paid the whole estate a bonus in the same night, and the room came out of it wary of her and willing to follow her.

Constance was very pleased with how she had handled it.

“From now on, anything that comes up goes to Nora first. If she can’t settle it, bring it to me. The rest of you can go.”

The Westons were a family, but the household ran like a corporation, since the maids, the security team, and the cleaning crews came to several hundred people between them.

Tessa and Marlene had been fighting over the keys to that house for years, openly and otherwise, and Constance had just handed them to a bride of three days.

Neither of them accepted it, and they went home to their own houses with their own plans.

The staff filed out after them.

Constance stopped on her way out. “It was one outfit. The staff got it wrong, you fired them, and now it’s finished.”

That was her way of telling Nora to leave Olivia alone and not run her off the property, since the whole thing really was small.

Next to getting the poison out of Julian, everything was small.

had already made her point, so she let Olivia be.

Olivia called after her. “Nora.”

Nora stopped and turned. “Yes?”
