Chapter 71 The Thirteen Gates

via had been waiting for jealousy, for a scene, for Nora to block the treatment and turn the whole house upside down, because that would have turned Constance against her.
Julian’s health was the one line Constance wouldn’t let anyone cross.
Instead, Nora hadn’t made a sound of protest, and she was pushing the session along faster than Olivia herself.
Nora blinked at her. “Aren’t you ready? Tell me what you need and I can assist.”
Olivia’s mouth twitched. “No need. I’m ready.”
She still hadn’t started, so Nora tugged at the waistband of his swim trunks. Told to strip, and he turns up in boxers with trunks over them.
For a needle session, none of that was necessary.
She looked up at Olivia. “Is he still wearing too much? I can take the rest off him.”
Both of her hands were already at the waistband.
Julian clamped a hand over hers. “Nora!”
“That’s… that’s fine,” Olivia said. “Leave it.”
Part of Olivia did want him stripped, but none of the points she needed were anywhere private.
Asking would have been pointless, and it would have shown exactly what she was thinking.
She lifted a medical case onto the table and opened it. Inside sat rows of custom scalpels in every size, one for every specialty.
There were emergency drugs in there too, the ones that actually worked.
One look and Nora’s eyes lit up. That was the kit she had always wanted, with everything in it.
The scalpels alone were beautiful, and there wasn’t a gap anywhere in the set.
The drugs started at $1,000,000 a dose, and most people couldn’t buy them at any price.
Olivia had more than a dozen of them, and she carried them around in a case.
Whatever the truth about Cordelia and the Snowbell name, Nora understood right then that being a daughter of that medical family carried real weight.
Then Olivia brought out a full set of gold needles, and Nora’s brows pulled tight. “Are those the Goldwyrm needles?”
Needles came in silver and in gold, and gold conducted far better, which made it more effective than plain silver.

Gold was expensive and had to be stored carefully or it bent, so most practitioners worked in silver.

The Goldwyrm set was the finest gold made. A complete one started at $10,000,000, and the design itself care down from the Caduceus Order.
It wasn’t only a set of needles. A set like that said something about whoever owned it.
Olivia stared at her. “How do you even know about the Goldwyrm needles?”
Rosalind had told her about them in her first life.
She had only ever heard of them. She had never seen a set.
The real answer wasn’t one she could give. “Your grandmother is the Snowbell Healer, isn’t she? I’ve heard the Snowbell Healer is the only person who owns a Goldwyrm set. Put that together with who you are and it wasn’t hard to guess.”
Pride came over Olivia’s whole face. “It is. Before I learned, my grandmother was the only one who could use them. She heads the Caduceus Order.”
She gave Nora a look of grudging respect. “You do know a great deal. I hadn’t heard of the Goldwyrm needles myself until recently. My grandmother has buried the Snowbell name so deep that I’m surprised it reached you at all.”
Nora’s gaze went heavy, and there was something behind the question. “Then can you work the Duskdawn Nine? The Fivefold Method? The Thirteen Gates?”
Olivia was sterilizing the needles, and hearing Nora reel off that many names turned her look into something closer to alarm.
“You know an awful lot, Nora. Do you work with needles yourself?”
“A little,” Nora said. “Those methods I’ve only heard about.”
Rosalind had described them to her in her first life, when she was already dying and could still talk about them but no longer had the strength to teach them.
So Nora had come away knowing exactly one.
She asked the next part almost hungrily. “Dr. Blithe, the ones I just named. Do you know all of them?”
“I’m still working on the Duskdawn Nine,” Olivia said. “I finished the Fivefold Method recently. My grandmother mentioned the Thirteen Gates once and told me it was lost, so I never had the chance. Everything else I have.”
Nora’s eyes widened, and she only got more confused. “The Thirteen Gates is lost? Your grandmother is the Snowbell Healer and even she can’t work it?”
But the one method Rosalind had taught her was the Thirteen Gates, and it was written into the Snowbell Journal.
Rosalind had only described the rest, so Nora would recognize them and could teach herself if she ever got the chance.
