Bridget came back to her the next day with a different problem. “Miss Sinclair, Sabrina has an endorsement dear. The money is fair, but something about it bothers me. Do you want to renegotiate?”

Nora pulled the contract and read it, and her brows drew together. “Couples’ diamond rings with a married Oscar winner she’s already been linked to in the press. That campaign would do real damage to her.”

She read further. The fee was $1,000,000, which wasn’t bad at all for Sabrina’s level of fame.

The penalty for breaking the contract was $30,000,000.

Pairing with a famous actor was free publicity and a plum job, but Mandy wasn’t the kind of person who lef a good contract lying around for somebody else. There’s a hole in this somewhere.

Nora’s guard went up, and she looked at the name of the client. “Everstone Jewelers.”

This wasn’t one of the small brands she had handled before. Everstone was fully licensed and a national chain, so getting out of the contract by reporting them wasn’t going to work.

So Nora drove over to their offices herself to renegotiate.

The receptionist at Everstone looked up when she came in. “Good afternoon. Do you have an appointment?”

“No. I’m Nora Sinclair from Starfall Media. I’d like to speak to Mr. Frey about Sabrina Cole’s endorsement.”

“I’m sorry, you’ll need an appointment.”

That made her anxious. The campaign went public tomorrow, and once the announcement was out, the whole thing would be far harder to unwind.

“Then I’m making one now. Please tell Mr. Frey I’m here, and I’ll wait.”

She sat down in the waiting area, and calling Julian never crossed her mind.

Bringing him in over a jewelry company would have been a waste of him.

Upstairs, Adrian caught sight of her and frowned, and the whip marks across his back began to ache.

“Find out what Nora Sinclair is doing here,” he said.

While she waited, Nora went through Everstone’s collections properly.

By the time she finished she was thoroughly confused. Mandy handing Sabrina a deal this good made no

sense at all.

The ring in the campaign was a new release from Vesper, one of the biggest names in jewelry design, and it came out of the house’s signature line.

Fronting a Vesper design sent a career straight up, and A-list actresses fought over the chance.

And this just falls into Sabrina’s lap?

“Miss Sinclair.”

After 15 minutes or so the receptionist came over, smiling.

“Is Mr. Frey free?” Nora asked.

“He’s in a meeting for another hour. If you’re willing to wait, I can book you in.”

Nora checked the time. It was a little past eleven, so another hour still only put her at noon.

She nodded, happy enough with that. “That works.”

The hour went quickly while she cleared work off her phone.

Just past noon the receptionist came back looking embarrassed. “Mr. Frey has finished his meeting, but he’s gone out to inspect the stores. The lunch window is the only time he has for it.

“Would you rather meet him at the mall, or shall I book you in for tomorrow?”

Nora frowned. The announcement dropped at eight the next morning, and even if a meeting tomorrow went well, the actor’s fans and Vesper’s fans would tear Sabrina apart for pulling out after the fact.

“Give me the address. I’ll go to him.”

She drove to the Everstone counter at the address she had been given, where the staff told her he had already finished there and moved on to the next store.

So she drove to that one, and the answer was the same. He had just left.

Once was an accident and twice was a coincidence, but three times was somebody doing it on purpose.

Hours of driving on an empty stomach had burned through her patience, and her temper came up right behind it.

She drove straight back to the Everstone offices, ready to take somebody’s head off.

Lionel Frey got to her first, a heavyset man in a good suit, all apology. “You must be Nora Sinclair from Starfall. I’m so sorry. Today has been chaos.

“My assistant never got my schedule straight, and you spent your whole afternoon chasing me across the city. I can’t apologize enough.

“I’ve already let her go over it.”

It was hard to swing at a man who was already apologizing, and he had gone as far as firing someone. Whether the firing was real or not, the gesture was there.

Executives at that level really were different. Every sentence landed clean and left her nothing to push against.

She still needed the deal, so she put the temper away and smiled. “It’s fine. I turned up without an appointment. That part is on me.”
