Chapter 76 A Bowl on His Head
Lionel had stopped in the doorway, and hearing all of that put a cold sweat on him.
She’ll say absolutely anything. Does she even remember why we’re at this table tonight?

The warmth went out of Adrian’s eyes and came straight back. The corner of his mouth lifted, and the polished, easy charm slid into place again.
“I’m glad that isn’t on your mind. Mandy is deeply insecure, so I was testing you.”
Nora gave him a flat look. “Right.”
Inside, though, the relief hit hard.
Adrian suspected everyone. If she had dodged the question about the rescue, he would have been more certain, not less.
Because she met it head on and even floated the idea that she was the one, he had stopped believing it.
Men like him circled a question three or four times before landing on a conclusion and congratulating themselves on it.
She did need to break the candy habit, though, or at least start carrying something else.
Her blood sugar dropped easily, so she always had something on her.
Butterscotch was the one she always carried, and that was about something else entirely.
Only when the two of them stopped talking and the air cleared did Lionel come back in.
The servers brought the food and the wine.
A few minutes later, two more people came in, the jewelry designer Vesper and Trevor.
Trevor lit up at the sight of her and dropped into the chair beside her. “Nora. Are you here for me?”
She frowned at him, cold. “Don’t sit next to me.”
What a day. Adrian at dinner, and now Trevor.
He looked wounded. “There’s nowhere else to sit.”
The private room was small, and it wasn’t a big table either.
Lionel and Vesper had both brought young dates, which left Adrian and Trevor as the only two without one.
That gave her a choice between sitting next to Adrian and sitting next to Trevor.
Adrian was the one to stay away from, so Trevor it was.
Nora turned in her seat. “What are you even doing here?”

“I’m the general manager at Everstone. I heard you had business to discuss, so I came straight over.”
ra glanced at him, then across at Adrian.
One jewelry company, and it comes with both of the men I want nothing to do with.

Lionel was surprised all over again. “You’re well connected, Miss Sinclair. You know Mr. Pierce, and you’re close with Mr. Lane as well.”
Trevor’s face went serious. “Nora is the woman I love. Nobody in this company gives her a hard time. Anyone who does can pack their desk and get out.”
Lionel turned to her at once, falling over himself. “My apologies. That came out wrong. Please don’t hold it against me.”
He lifted his glass. “My mistake. That one’s on me.”
Adrian looked Trevor over, all pretty-boy polish. “Nora is the woman you love?”
Trevor nodded. “She is. We went to high school together, and I’ve wanted her since then. Even if…”
Nora cut him off flat. “Don’t drag that garbage out again, Trevor. Love of your life, my ass. You’ve been through at least eight girlfriends, so don’t sit here and play devoted.
“And I came to talk business, not to go through any of that with you. If you want that conversation, we can have it somewhere else.”
Trevor turned her stomach
There was no telling how many working brain cells he had left. That night he had talked down to her like showing up at all was a favor she should have thanked him for on her knees.
Now he had switched to the sweet act, all soft talk and devotion, and it was worse.
He took the tongue-lashing and kept smiling at her like she was something precious. “All right. If you don’t want to talk about it, we won’t.
“So what did you want to discuss? Is it the product, or something else? Whatever you ask for, you’ll get.”
He pushed his sleeves back, took a shrimp, peeled it, and dropped it into her bowl.
Nora looked at the shredded mess of it and wanted nothing more to do with the bowl.
“I
“I want out of the contract. My client isn’t fronting your campaign.”
“Why?” Trevor asked. “If it’s the piece, I’ll have the designer rework it. If it’s the actor she’s paired with, I’ll replace him.
“If it’s the money, we can raise it. How does $30,000,000 for the campaign sound?”
Raising the fee would double the penalty for walking away.
He kept his voice soft and coaxing. “Nora, as long as you don’t cancel, I’ll do whatever you want. Name your terms. Even if the term is me.”
