Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 77

Chapter 77 Wash It Off

ra gave him a cold smile. “There it is. You’ve finally stopped pretending.”

Finished

Trevor picked another lump of potato out of his hair. “You can’t get out of it, Nora. As long as that contract exists, I have a dozen ways to put your client in breach.

“So be reasonable. Be my mistress, or just give me one night, and you can cancel whatever you want and raise the fee as high as you want. Otherwise…”

There was nothing subtle left in it.

The warmth went out of Nora’s face, and the look she turned on him could have cut. “Are you threatening me?”

All the swagger drained out of Trevor under that stare.

Then he remembered who was backing him, and his nerve came right back.

He sneered at her. “What, are you going to run to a man about it?

“That’s all you’ve got, Nora. So you have a marriage certificate with your name on it. You still slept your way up here, and that’s the only reason you think you can talk to me like this.”

He didn’t dare say Julian’s name out loud, because Lionel and everyone above him were frightened enough of Julian to handle Nora carefully.

As far as Trevor was concerned, the only reason she could talk that way was that she had married Julian.

If Julian was all she had, then she was no different from any other woman who traded a bed for a living.

Lionel had been watching all of it with his mouth open. He glanced at Adrian and dropped his voice. “Mr. Lane. Miss Sinclair’s sister is Mr. Pierce’s girlfriend.”

Trevor went stiff, and he thought about the chair that had dumped him on the floor.

He had seen Adrian draw his foot back at that exact moment. Adrian had knocked the chair out from under

him, and he had done it for her.

Everything falls into her lap. She marries the richest man in the country, and her sister’s boyfriend is one of the Big Four.

Trevor looked at Adrian with real worry, and something close to fear.

Adrian swirled the red wine in his glass and smiled, easy as anything. “My girlfriend and Miss Sinclair don’t get along.

“If I helped her, my girlfriend would take it badly. Then again, they are sisters, so if…”

He looked at Nora. “If you’re willing to ask Mandy, and Mandy asks me on your behalf, I could be persuaded.”

Whatever was behind his eyes stayed buried, and there was no reading what he actually meant by it.

Firusked

It sounded like he was settling a score for Mandy. It sounded just as much like he wanted Nora to beg him.

ora let out a short laugh. “I came here tonight to have a real conversation. If we can’t have one, there’s no pot sitting at this table.”

She picked up her bag and looked at Trevor without any warmth at all. “I think every one of you is going to regret tonight.”

Adrian clearly wasn’t stepping in, which let Trevor breathe and put the swagger back in him. “If you go home and whisper in your husband’s ear, then sure, I’ll regret it.”

He was goading her, betting that her pride would stop her from asking Julian for anything./

That got a hard laugh out of her. “Save it. I never planned on leaning on anybody. If I had, you wouldn’t be standing here talking to me at all.”

She stood, took one more look at him, decided she still couldn’t stand the sight of him, and poured her entire glass of wine over his head. “You’re revolting. Go wash it off.”

“Nor… agh!”

Then she drove the point of her heel down onto his foot and walked out.

Trevor screamed after her. “Don’t come crawling back to me later, Nora! By then one night won’t be enough

to fix it!”

Adrian stood as well, picked up his coat, and stopped in front of Trevor on his way past.

That alone was enough to start Trevor shaking. “Mr… Mr. Pierce.”

He hasn’t changed his mind, has he? He isn’t coming for me right now?

Adrian smiled down at him. “Not bad. You have nerve. The vice president’s chair at Everstone is empty. Take

it.”

He clapped him on the shoulder. “Do good work. I have high hopes for you.”

The fear turned straight into delight. “I won’t let you down, Mr. Pierce.”

Adrian clearly couldn’t stand her, and that made the two of them allies.

With Adrian behind him now, he wouldn’t have to be careful with Nora at all.

Nora got into the elevator, and just as the doors were closing a hand came through and stopped them.

Adrian stepped in after it.

Nora had nothing to say to him, so she faced front and pretended he wasn’t there.

He didn’t say anything either.

It was only the two of them in the elevator, neither one talking, and the silence thickened until it pressed on
