Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 81

Chapter 81 What She’s After

Nora just talked to me like I’m one of the maids!” Olivia burst out.

Nora blinked at her, wide-eyed. “Where in any of that did I call you a maid?”

Then, she made a face. “Olivia, if you think that little of the job, why do you keep assuming everyone means you? That’s awfully thin skin.”

Olivia’s mouth opened and shut, and her face went white, then red, then white again.

She couldn’t argue, because there was nothing to argue with.

After all, Nora hadn’t called her a maid once, start to finish.

Constance rubbed her aching shoulder and turned to Nora. “When did you get here? Why didn’t anyone wake me? I’m old now. One second I’m talking, the next I’m out.”

There was an edge in her voice when she went on. “Next time something like this happens, you wake me.”

Nora smiled. “I only just got here. Did you need me for something, Grandma?”

“There is something,” Constance said. “I don’t know yet whether it’s big or small. Mostly I want to hear it from you.”

She glanced toward the door. “Olivia, give us the room.”

Olivia shot Nora a curious4ook, but she went without a word and pulled the door shut behind her.

That left the two of them alone.

Only then did Constance ask, “What did you do today, and who did you see?”

So this was about the photo, the one where Trevor had come within an inch of kissing her.

Nora’s face stayed calm. “Ask me whatever you want to ask, Grandma. You don’t have to circle around it, or set me up so you can put me in my place.

“I respect you, so you can just come out with it.”

Nora sat there without a nerve in her body, and the sight of her pulled a sigh out of Constance. “I am angry. I wanted to see how you’d handle it, whether you’d explain on your own.

“That way I wouldn’t have to drag the whole thing into the open, which never ends well.”

She turned her phone around and held it out. “Someone sent me a picture of you and Trevor Lane getting cozy. That’s the name, isn’t it?”

Trevor had turned up at the Weston estate once, and young men rarely came to that door, so Constance remembered exactly who he was.

Nora gave the screen a glance, and her mouth twisted. “So who sent you this one? Whoever it is isn’t even trying to be subtle.”

“Meaning?” Constance asked.

“When sent me the same picture an hour ago,” Nora said. “She says Damon sent it to her. Now it’s on your phone too, so I’m guessing…”

She raised an eyebrow, smiling. “Julian has it by now as well, doesn’t he? Somebody is working yery hard to turn this house against me. You’re not buying it, are you, Grandina?”

Constance held her gaze a moment, then took the phone back and answered honestly. “Half of me is. You/ two do have that history from high school.”

Nora gave her a flat look. “Grandma, nobody with a working brain would be that stupid. Walk away from Julian for Trevor? A pretty boy who lives off women, and a cheat on top of it.

“Sure, Julian and I got married in a week, and there’s not much feeling in it yet. I’m in this for the money and the name, and that’s exactly why I’d stay right where I am. What would I want with a kept man?”

She said it without a scrap of shame, and it startled a laugh out of Constance.

“The money and the name?” she asked, half exasperated.

Nora shrugged. “Is that supposed to be a bad thing, Grandma?”

Constance shook her head, at a loss for what to do with her. “You don’t even bother defending yourself. The things that come out of your mouth…”

She sighed. “All right. I believe you. But you’ll have to see what Julian makes of it.”

Nora looked at her, surprised. “That’s it? You’re not angry anymore, Grandma?”

A minute ago, Constance had been ready to leave her standing there for half an hour purely to make a point.

Nora stared at her. I haven’t explained a thing and she’s already let it go?

Constance shot her a look. “I’m old, not senile. What does one picture prove? When I have my portrait taken, they shoot a hundred frames before I find one I like.

“And whoever did this happened to catch you and Trevor at exactly the right second, and got exactly one frame of it. If I were the one holding the camera, I’d have shot everything before and after. I’d have taken video.

“Wouldn’t that be a lot harder to argue with than a single picture?”

Constance had outlasted every mistress her husband ever kept, so there was no trick a woman could play that she hadn’t already watched somebody try.

“You knew the whole time,” Nora said, wounded. “And you still ignored me and almost left me standing there for half an hour in front of Olivia.”

Constance’s face went serious all at once, and her voice dropped. “Nora.”

The shift caught Nora off guard. “Grandma?”
