Nara had texted, “Yeah, some asshole got me worked up. Trevor, that piece of garbage. In front of you, he plays the sweet devoted act and says he’ll wait for me to come around, and then he turns around and says the filthiest things to my face.
“Men like that are revolting. He couldn’t just talk, he had to lean in on me, and he nearly got his mouth on my face. I turned my bowl over on his head.
“He was humiliated enough to drop the act, so I slapped him and then I stepped on him. He came after me, and now he can wait and see what happens to him.”
It was only text, but her temper came through the screen.
Julian texted, “Do you want me to make something happen to him?”
Nora texted back, “No need. I can handle it myself.”
Julian texted, “All right. I’m on my way home.”
Nora read back through the thread and found it strange, because it looked like an ordinary marriage.
Nothing about it looked like two people who had married in a hurry to use each other.
She had barely closed his thread when a message from Wren came in.
She opened it and found the photo of Trevor with his mouth almost at her cheek, shot from an angle so precise that it read as a kiss.
Wren texted, “Nora, Damon sent me this. What happened? Is Julian going to get the wrong idea?”
Nora frowned at it and wrote back, “It’s the angle. It’s nothing. I’ve already told him about it.”
Has he seen it? What is he going to think of me?
It occurred to her that she cared what Julian thought, far more than she had realized.
She didn’t want him getting the wrong idea about her.
“Mrs. Weston.” Hattie knocked at the study door. “Madam Weston would like to see you in her room.”
Nora was still looking at the photo. “Did she say what it’s about?”
Hattie shook her head. “No. She did look a little unhappy.”
Nora put the phone down and went up to Constance’s room.
Olivia was working Constance’s shoulders when she walked in.
Constance had her eyes shut and looked thoroughly comfortable.
“Grandma,” Nora said.

Constance didn’t open her eyes. “A little to the left, Olivia. You can press harder than that.”
via said she would, then looked up with a smile. “I’m working her pressure points, Nora.
“She hasn’t been sleeping well and her appetite is off. The full sequence takes another half hour. Can you wait?”
Nora looked over again, and Constance still had her eyes shut.
“Grandma, you asked for me?”
Constance had been good to her in her first life, and she was the head of this family, so Nora asked again politely.
Constance kept her eyes shut and gave no sign of hearing her.
Olivia softened her voice. “She’s comfortable enough that she’s fallen asleep. Wait a little, Nora, and keep quiet so you don’t disturb her.”
Nora kept her face still. She calls me up here and then leaves me standing around for half an hour of massage. This is meant to put me in my place.
Nora looked at Constance, eyes closed and plainly not asleep. “If she’s sleeping, then it can’t have been anything urgent. I’ll go back to my room.”
Grandma was good to me once, but that doesn’t buy her a free shot at me.
She would pay back what she owed. She just wasn’t going to pay it back by standing there and taking this.
Olivia’s head snapped up. “You’re really just leaving, Nora? She sent for you, so there must be something she wants to say.
“It’s only half an hour. Can’t you wait? Her health matters, and she’s finally asleep. You can’t want me to wake
her.”
Olivia had been looking forward to watching Nora stand there for half an hour, and one sentence had turned her toward the door instead.
Nora frowned at her. “Keep your voice down, Olivia. Don’t wake her when she’s finally asleep.
“Another half hour of this puts us at ten thirty, and she’ll be going to bed anyway.
“If it’s urgent, someone can come and get me then. If it isn’t, and you keep me standing here waiting, that starts to look like somebody putting me in my place and showing me who runs this house.
“She’s far too fond of me to do that. Or are you using her name to make things difficult for me?”
Olivia couldn’t come up with a single answer.
“Nora…
“Shh.” Nora put a finger to her lips and dropped her voice. “She’s a light sleeper, Miss Blithe. Better not to talk at all.
