Julian shrugged into his robe and sat up. “If Nora has it now, she can take over the needles.”

Olivia’s eyes went wide, because that meant even less time near him.

She spoke up at once. “No. Nora only just learned it, and only on a mannequin. If she makes one mistake on you, it could kill you!”

Julian frowned.

Olivia pressed on. “And your body needs the gold needles. Nora doesn’t have a set.”

Nora turned to Julian. “Let Olivia do it. We’re paying a fortune for a live-in doctor, and she’s here to work. not to be waited on.”

Besides, she wanted to learn more, and she wanted to see how much of Olivia’s medicine lined up with what Rosalind had taught her.

Julian turned his head toward her.

Nora nodded at him. “Trust Dr. Blithe.”

Olivia was in love with him, so she would never do anything that put him at risk. On that much. Nora felt entirely safe.

“If you’re comfortable with it,” Julian said, his voice flat, “then Olivia keeps doing the needles.

Olivia let out the breath she had been holding.

Nora tilted her head at her. “You’ll still let me sit in and watch, though, Dr. Blithe?”

The question caught Olivia off balance, since she had already decided to stop letting Nora watch.

She had allowed it before on the theory that nobody could learn a thing from watching. Now, though…

Saying yes yesterday and no today would make a liar of her in front of everyone.

All she could do was swallow it and arrange her face into something welcoming. “Of course you can.”

Nora smiled at her, and it looked entirely sincere. “Wonderful.”

That session left Olivia with a pounding head and a knot of rage she couldn’t work loose.

Once Nora and Julian were gone, she picked up the phone and called Cordelia.

“Grandma, Nora knows the Fivefold Method. She says she picked it up from watching me do it once. How does anyone learn it in one sitting?

“Is she one of those medical prodigies you told me about?”

Cordelia’s brows drew together. “You’re certain she has it?”

Olivia told her the whole story, and the misery came through. “I made a fool of myself in front of Julian. I still can’t stand to think about it.”

Cordelia heard her out and lost her temper. “Have you learned nothing? Nora knows medicine, so of course she knows the points.

“How do you think she knew what to give him for his appetite? Who do you think kept him breathing on his wedding day?

“Any of that should have told you she has training. She isn’t at your level or mine, but she is nowhere near a beginner.

“And knowing all of it, you offered to teach her the Fivefold Method. You practically begged her to make a fool of you!”

Olivia had called for sympathy, and the scolding only made it worse. “I thought… I thought she was…”

Cordelia cut her off. “Stop thinking. The world is full of people better than you are. You have real talent for medicine, and I have always said so.

“Nora almost certainly grew up around it. Use your head and stop lining up to be humiliated.

“And keep your attention on Julian’s treatment. Everything else, I’ll handle. Do you understand me?”

Olivia agreed, because nobody argued with Cordelia, and she had never once tried.

“Madam Weston sent for Nora today. I thought she was going to tear into her, and nothing came of it at all. I don’t know what she was so angry about, or why she stopped.”

Cordelia’s frown deepened. “Then don’t concern yourself with it. Treat Julian and leave everything else alone!”

She said it twice more before she would let Olivia off the phone.

Olivia said yes to all of it, and none of it settled anything.

She wanted Julian to look at her and want her, and sooner or later she was going to get there!

All she had to do was cure him. Then, he would love her, and Nora would turn his stomach!

Across town, the same photo had frightened Mandy enough to send her straight to Adrian.

Adrian had been going over a contract. He put it down and came around the desk as she walked in. “Has something happened?”
