Chapter 96 Three Generations Back

Nara smiled. “It just feels strange.”

Normally she came home to Olivia’s sweet act and traded a couple of jabs with her. With Olivia gone for the night, Nora caught herself wondering what she was plotting.

“Coming back from Wren’s?” Julian asked.

Nora finished the water and set the glass down. “Yeah. Damon’s such a piece of garbage I couldn’t stand there and watch it. Wren is on her own, so I have to do more for her.”

She gave him a curious look. “How did you know?”

“Damon is a good friend of mine,” Julian said. “He came home, found no wife and a signed divorce agreement on the nightstand, and called me for your number. I didn’t give it to him.”

Nora frowned. “Don’t. Wren is staying at my apartment. Do me a favor and keep him from finding her.”

“I can do that.” Julian looked at her. “For what it’s worth, Damon…”

Nora’s head came up and she cut him off. “Are you about to defend him?

“Are the two of you the same kind of man? Birds of a feather and all that. Is that what you want, a wife at home and a woman in every other part of town?”

Julian didn’t know whether to laugh or argue. “I haven’t said anything yet, and you’ve already lumped me in

with him.”

Nora looked at him, dead serious. “People take their own side. If I hadn’t stepped in, that house would have finished her.

“What kind of man does that? If he didn’t want her, he shouldn’t have married her. He married her, so he should have treated her decently.

“The girlfriend gets pregnant and that’s a baby. What Wren was carrying wasn’t? She lost it, she had surgery, and did he come and see her once?”

The scene at the hospital came back to her, and her laugh came out cold. “He didn’t. When he did run into her, he slapped her across the face, and she was fresh out of surgery!”

She had talked herself into a real fury by then, and she finished with a glare at him. “He’s your best friend, so what does that make you? I’m done talking to you.”

She turned on her heel and went upstairs still fuming.

Julian sat there blank for a second, then got up and went after her. “You can’t write me off over Damon Winter.”

“You are the company you keep. Spend enough time with him and you turn into him.” Nora huffed at him. “And you have a childhood sweetheart of your own.”

“I’ve always kept myself clean,” Julian said. “I’m nothing like Damon. Don’t take it out on me.”

Nora made a face. “It’s no business of mine. We didn’t fall in love and then get married. We each got what

wanted.”

“You’re not going to tell me to stop seeing him, then?” he asked.

“That’s your business,” she said. “I’m not interfering.”

Julian had nothing to say to that.

She’s actually angry. Don’t bring him up again.

He wondered whether this was what his friends meant when they talked about a woman being unreasonable.

Nora thought it over and decided she had taken Damon out on the wrong man, so she turned around. “Do you think I’m being unreasonable?”

Julian shook his head fast. “Not at all. Anyone would worry. I don’t think much of what Damon has done either, and I’ve told him so.”

That put Nora in a better mood. “Just keep him away from her address. She needs quiet for a while.”

“If he wants to find her, he will,” Julian said.

Nora made a dismissive sound and let it go. Damon had no interest in finding her, and worrying about it gave him more credit than he deserved.

Julian came and stood in front of her. “The research you asked for on the Blithes and old Dr. Blithe is finished. I brought the file home. Do you want to look at it now?”

Nora had suspected for a while that Rosalind and the Blithes were connected somehow, and she had asked Julian to look into it. Nothing had come back for weeks, and hearing it now lit her whole face up. “Yes. Right

now!”

Julian looked down at her tugging eagerly on his hand and let out a quiet laugh.

Nora pulled him into the study and got straight to it. “Where is it?”

“On the desk.” His eyes stayed on her the whole way.

She let go and crossed to the desk, where a sealed envelope was waiting exactly as promised.

She picked it up, delighted, and went to sit down, and before she got there Julian caught her wrist.

Nora looked back at him, confused. “Isn’t this the one?”

“It is.” Julian took the chair first and pulled her down with him. “Sit here. We’ll read it together.”

His chest was solid against her back, one arm was firm around her waist, and his breath was warm against her ear.

Being that close to him put color in her face and set her pulse tripping over itself.
