Annie was staring off into space when Christian walked in with a steaming bowl of oatmeal.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, he scooped up a spoonful, blew on it, and held it to her lips.
Annie instinctively backed away a little.
"I can eat by myself."
Such a gesture felt far too intimate to her.
Nonetheless, Christian didn't move. His hand holding the spoon was steady as he fixed his gaze on her.
In the end, Annie relented and ate the oatmeal a little at a time. It was soft and smooth, with a hint of sweetness.
"Dear, you should stick to light meals for now."
Annie's movements froze completely at his low, deep voice.
Even though they were legally married, hearing him call her that so naturally and intimately made her heart pound.
Christian was secretly amused upon seeing her stunned expression.
"You should get used to it."
He leaned slightly closer to her, his warm breath brushing her ear. "You can just call me Christian from now on."
He paused deliberately before speaking in an even lower voice. "Or you could call me darling instead."
With his handsome face just inches away and his words hitting her like a brick, there was no way she could say she wasn't affected.
Annie's cheeks instantly burned red. She quickly buried herself in the blanket, wrapping it around herself tightly.
"You should go. I'm going to sleep now."
Christian chuckled softly and gazed tenderly at her.
No longer teasing her, he watched her breathing gradually slow. Once she seemed to have really fallen asleep, he silently left the room.
He even thoughtfully turned off the lights for her.
The moment Christian left, there was a rhythmic knock at the front door.
He went to open it, only to find his assistant, Michael Green.
Michael was in a sharp suit, his expression respectful. He had a folder in his hand.
"Mr. Parker."
He peeked inside before asking in a soft voice, "Mr. Parker, is Mrs. Parker asleep?"
Christian didn't respond, merely shutting the door behind him and walking out into the corridor.
Brandon looked at him with a troubled expression.
"The hospital has decided that if this isn't settled today, we will have no choice but to dismiss you."
Sean's eyes widened in disbelief.
"Dismiss me? Just because of a few posts? I'm one of the best cardiac surgeons here!"
"I know, I know."
Brandon sighed before continuing helplessly, "But last night, the director personally called to tell me that according to instructions from the very top, if this matter isn't resolved soon, the hospital can close its doors permanently."
Exhaling heavily, he approached Sean to pat him on the shoulder.
"The fastest solution now is for you to publicly apologize and clarify the situation. In the meantime, the hospital has decided to demote you to associate chief physician."
Sean froze, his mind buzzing. He couldn't understand any of this.
Jynston General Hospital's biggest shareholder was the Lawson family, and over them presided the Parker family, Jynston's most enigmatic, low-profile, and prestigious power.
Rumor had it that the current head of the Parker family was ruthless and decisive.
Since he assumed power at 13 years old, his name and face had been completely hidden from the public.
Why would the Lawsons and Parkers interfere in his and Annie's matters?
