The new message was from Christian.
It read, "Ann, where are you? Irene's fine. She's at the hotel waiting for our wedding."
Irene was fine and at the hotel.
Annie's body went rigid. She slowly lifted her head and fixed her gaze on Sean, who drove beside her without the slightest distraction.
It was too much of a coincidence.
Now, it all looked ridiculous.
She knew that this was a setup and figured that the anonymous text had been his doing.
He had wanted to ruin her wedding.
She'd been so worried about Irene that she'd ignored every obvious detail right in front of her.
A chill ran down Annie's spine. When she spoke, her voice sounded like it had been cut from ice. "Pull over."
Sean acted like he hadn't heard her. His hands didn't shift on the wheel, and the car actually picked up speed.
Something in Annie snapped. She lunged toward the door and slammed her palm against it. "Sean, I said, pull over! Are you deaf? Do you not understand basic words?"
Sean finally turned his head and dropped all pretenses.
"Annie, calm down," he said evenly. "I know that you've also been reborn. We've been tangled up for two lifetimes. Isn't that enough to prove what we are?
"You just needed to donate bone marrow to Cecilia. She would've survived. Then, our wedding could've gone on as planned. I never imagined that you'd actually marry Christian."
His eyes narrowed, and something dark and possessive flickered at the bottom of his gaze. He continued, "How was I supposed to sit back and watch that happen?"
Annie almost laughed, not because it was funny, but because she found the entire situation absurd. It seemed that Sean had completely lost his mind.
She roared, "Sean, keep dreaming! I'm not donating my bone marrow again! Give it up!"
Sean watched her outright refusal, and a strange smile tugged at his lips.
Sean glanced in the rearview mirror, his expression turning even darker. He jerked the wheel, trying to shake the patrol car of their trail.
Annie refused to sit there and do nothing. She couldn't let him take her away like this.
The patrol car behind them was her only chance. She had to take the risk.
A hard, resolute look flashed in Annie's eyes as she lunged for the driver's seat and clamped both hands around the steering wheel.
"Are you out of your mind?" Sean shouted, veins standing out on the back of his hand as he fought to rip the wheel back.
The car fishtailed violently, slashing S-curves across the road. Tires screamed against the pavement.
The traffic officer behind them shouted through a loudspeaker for the car ahead to stop, his voice edged with alarm.
The patrol car drew closer, nearly alongside them.
Sean's face twisted with a ruthless determination as he wrenched the wheel hard to the right, diving toward a narrow side road.
