Cecilia thought that Annie was just stubbornly putting on a calm facade. She had no idea that Annie only found her dirty tricks ridiculous.
Annie couldn't be bothered with Cecilia, so she turned and waved down another cab nearby. It stopped in front of her. She opened the door, got in, and didn't spare Cecilia a single glance.
"Take me to Ruby Photo Studio," she said to the driver.
The car drove off, leaving Cecilia behind. She was so angry that her face had turned ashen.
30 minutes later, the cab stopped in front of Ruby Photo Studio's entrance. After paying the cab fare, Annie rushed into the photo studio with her digital tablet and handbag.
The lobby was crowded, with staff rushing from place to place. The atmosphere was tense and hectic.
Annie walked up to the reception desk and gave the receptionist a polite smile. "Hello, I'm Annie Steward, a designer from EVL. I'd like to see Maeve to discuss the design of her gown for the red carpet event."
The receptionist was a young lady. When she heard that, she scrutinized Annie and asked, "Do you have an appointment?"
"No. This matter is rather urgent."
The receptionist picked up her phone. After whispering some words into the phone's receiver, she hung up and looked at Annie apologetically. She said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Steward. Maeve's schedule is full today. She doesn't have time to spare."
Annie had expected this outcome. "In that case, may I speak to her assistant? It'll only take five minutes."
"Maeve's assistant is busy with the photoshoot as well. Besides, any work-related matter should go straight to her agent, Ms. Brown." The receptionist's tone was polite, but she was immovable.
Annie switched on her digital tablet and tapped open the final design draft that she had worked on all night. She practised the speech she had prepared in her head over and over again.
Time passed. The people in the lounge came and went, but Annie stayed in her spot.
Suddenly, a shadowy figure rushed out from the hallway leading to the dressing room. It was a young woman, dressed like a celebrity's assistant.
Clutching a wad of paper, she walked to the trash can. After looking around nervously, she quickly threw the paper into the trash can and scurried away. The entire process took only a few seconds, but she looked extremely on edge.
Annie's gaze faltered. She didn't stand up immediately. Instead, she only rose slowly after the assistant disappeared around the corner.
She walked to the trash can, bent over, and picked up the wad of crumpled paper. When she unfolded it, she saw that it was a medical test report from the hospital.
