Sean believed that this was a scene Annie had put on just to spite him.
Their engagement had ended only recently. So how could she have already found someone to marry? And of all people, it had to be Christian.
He was a pretty boy with nothing to show for himself. Aside from that face, he had nothing.
Sean couldn't understand what Annie saw in Christian. How could she fall for a guy like that?
"Annie!" Sean roared at her retreating figure, his voice full of rage and disbelief. "You're going to go against me for a man like him? Don't you dare regret this!"
Annie didn't pause for even a moment.
Regret? What she regretted most was falling in love with Sean in her past life.
Ignoring the madman behind her, she grabbed Christian's arm and strode out of that suffocating place.
The moment Annie stepped out of the hospital building, the evening wind brushed past, bringing with it a chill. Only then did her taut nerves loosen. But immediately after came a crushing wave of fear and dread.
This place was her hell. Then, memories from her past life surged up like a tide.
The despair of betrayal, the agonizing pain of losing her child, and the unwillingness she felt moments before her death… All of it threatened to swallow her whole.
Annie's body began to tremble uncontrollably. Then, a pair of warm hands gently wrapped around her cold ones.
Snapping out of it, she raised her head and found Christian's deep, worried eyes on her.
Forcing a reassuring smile, Annie told him that she was fine. But no sooner had she left the hospital than she was pulled into a warm embrace before she could even take a steadying breath.
"Perhaps after this is over, we should end the contract early," she said. She didn't want to implicate him—especially someone who genuinely cared for her.
The arms around her suddenly tightened. But then, Christian released her only to grip her shoulders firmly, forcing her to look at him.
In his eyes was something Annie couldn't grasp. It was something deep and unyielding.
"Ann, I'm fine," he finally responded. "Irene has been urging us to have a wedding. I've thought about it, so let's go try on wedding outfits this weekend."
Wedding outfits?
Annie was stunned. She stared at him in shock, momentarily forgetting how to speak.
After all, this was all just an act to help Irene feel at ease. Did they really need to take it this seriously?
