Edmund wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and laughed maniacally.

“Kolton, do you know what we have been through together?”

“I have known Josie since she was three or four years old. We weathered twenty years of storms together–what right do you have to compare yourself to me?”

“Let me tell you, you are nothing more than a tool she used to make me jealous, to make me suffer!”

Kolton shook his head and ordered the servants to throw Edmund as far away as possible.

When he returned to the living room, Josephine had just finished coaxing Jesslyn to sleep and stepped out of the bedroom.

The two locked eyes, and for a moment neither of them spoke.

Josephine was the first to break the silence. “Want to have a drink together?”

Kolton carried his glass of red wine onto the terrace, watching Josephine’s hair lift in the wind, his gaze flickering.

Josephine said nothing, merely drinking her wine in silence.

“Why don’t you ask me what’s going on between him and me? Then again, with how capable you are, you must have already investigated everything.”

She took a small sip and looked at Kolton seriously.

“It seems that every man around me is like this–knowing everything, understanding everything.”

“Only I am like a lost fawn, crashing into walls everywhere.”

Kolton’s voice was hoarse as he tried to explain. “Josie, I’m not what you think I am.”

Josephine nodded.

“I know. You’ve helped me a lot. But it’s precisely because I was with Edmund for so long, because I grew tired of a life where the other person always held the upper hand. I don’t want to depend on anyone, and I don’t want to be the weaker one in a relationship.”

Kolton clenched his wineglass and drained the red wine in one gulp.

His eyes were rimmed with red, his hair blown messy across his face by the wind.

This was nothing like his usual self.

“Josie, if… if I told you that this isn’t the first time I’ve experienced something like this, would you believe me?”
