Chapter 24

In a daze, Edmund felt as if he had fallen into a dream.

He dreamed that he was back on the training ground, standing under the blazing sun with cracked lips.

“Dad!”

Edmund turned around and saw Jesslyn with two small braids, carrying a bottle of soda as she threw herself into his arms.

Josephine was standing in the distance, waving the food in her hand at him.

This was a dream.

But he did not want to wake up.

Josephine had not smiled at him like this in a long time, and Jesslyn no longer called someone else Dad.

“So it turns out that what I was crying and chasing after all this time had been in my hands from the very beginning…”

Edmund watched as the shadows of the two slowly became transparent.

He lunged forward like a madman, only to grasp at nothing.

“No! Josie! Don’t leave me!”

The scene shifted, and he was back on the day Josephine gave birth, with wind and rain raging outside.

He floated in midair, watching himself in the courtyard issue a dark command to have Josephine’s uterus removed.

Edmund wanted to stop it, but the scene changed once again before his eyes.

Josephine stood in the kitchen, exhausted and drenched in sweat, while he held Stephen and watched television with Diana.

The constantly shifting scenes måde Edmund’s heart sink lower and lower.

Sometimes he was walking together with Diana, while Josephine stared at him from behind.

Sometimes he was standing at the shooting range, threatening Josephine into signing an agreement.

In the end, Edmund returned once more to the confinement room.

He saw Josephine collapsed on the floor, her entire body covered in blood.

“Josie… I’m sorry, I’m truly sorry…”

With tears streaming down his face, Edmund wanted to pull the person before him into his arms.

Josephine gently shook her head, her eyes as lifeless as stagnant water, as if they had never loved each other so fiercely at all.

“Edmund, I don’t love you anymore.”

“No, don’t say that. I know I was wrong, Josie, I really know I was wrong!”

He tried to grab Josephine, but she shattered at his touch, dissolving into countless points of starlight.

Edmund stood where he was, roaring endlessly.
