Amelia thought she must have heard the funniest joke in the world.

The nerve of him to say something like that! He made it sound as though it was her obligation to care for Nathan and that Nathan was her responsibility.

Was she supposed to just take care of their child while they enjoyed each other’s company this romantic night?

She wasn’t that cheap.

Amelia smirked. “Christopher Zephyr, what makes you think that I should treat Nathan as my son? I’ve made it clear before that I don’t want him!”

The moment she said so, she turned to leave; she didn’t give a damn about his response.

Nathan sniffed as he watched Amelia storm away.

The next day, Amelia packed up her things in their room and prepared to bring Evelyn to an enrichment class.

The moment she pulled her luggage case out of her room, she saw Nicole leaving her own room with Nathan in

A moment later, realization dawned upon Amelia.

They wanted to keep their rendezvous under wraps, so they returned to their own rooms first thing this morning. That way, they could continue claiming that their relationship was nothing but platonic.

Nicole shot Amelia a smile. “Good morning. Didn’t really get a chance to talk to you much yesterday. How’s work at Nova Nine been?”

Her question came out of nowhere.

Amelia didn’t think they were close enough for Nicole to be concerned about her work. She knew the saying to beware of Greeks bearing gifts. Nicole surely harbored no good intentions.

She decided to ignore Nicole.

But Nicole went on, saying, “I said that I’ll be shoulder to shoulder with Chris in the future, and he said you could be my assistant when the time comes. If you’re unhappy working at Nova Nine, feel free to come to me anytime. I’ll take it as repaying your kindness for helping to take care of Nathan.”

She was acting all high and mighty, looking down on Amelia and showing her mercy. She would never spare any opportunity to belittle and humiliate Amelia.

Amelia smirked in disdain. “He has no right to make any work arrangements for me, while you have no right to make me your assistant.”

Amelia didn’t want to waste her breath on something so meaningless. Instead, she held Evelyn’s hand and turned to walk away.

On the first day of work after the team bonding event ended everyone dove straight into work. The new system was up, and they had nailed down a few collaborations with some partners.

Mr. Hale called to check in on Amelia. “What kind of standard is this?”

Mr. Hale wasn’t impressed at all, even though the system was good enough to be classified as confidential in any company within the industry.

Amelia pursed her lips. “I’ll do better.”

After hanging up, Jasper comforted her, “He has a sharp tongue, but he’s a softie on the inside.”

Amelia nodded, knowing very clearly the expectations Mr. Hale had for her.

Working in this line was akin to rowing upstream. If one didn’t advance, one would only fall behind. Having been delayed for so many years, she hadn’t reached her peak yet.
