Amelia stopped dead in her tracks. She shot Nicole an icy look when she turned back to look at the latter.
"His life and death have nothing to do with me."
With that, Amelia turned around to leave.
Nicole was stunned as she stared at Amelia walking away.
Why was she being so stubborn? What was she doing at the hospital if not visiting Christopher?
Tania saw Amelia walking away and retracted her gaze. She said with a scoff, "She's just like her mother, putting on airs and pretending to be all that."
"Alright, Mom," Nicole said. "Let's head up."
Tania went upstairs to visit Christopher and gave him the cake, telling him that it was to celebrate their recent success. Since he was in the hospital and couldn't join in the celebrations, Tania specifically brought the cake over.
After eating the cake, Tania left, saying that she still had work to do back in the office.
"We bumped into Mrs. Zephyr downstairs. She was carrying a bag of what looked like daily necessities," Nicole said as she tidied up the table.
Christopher continued staring at his computer screen, focusing on his work.
Nicole didn't know if he had heard what she said, but his face remained indifferent.
To be accurate, he had always been apathetic and couldn't care less about anything regarding Amelia.
Nicole continued talking, as though speaking to herself.
"I thought Mrs. Zephyr was here to see you, so I told her not to worry since I was here. In the end, she told me that your life and death had nothing to do with her."
Seeing the cold look on Christopher's face, she harbored a guess.
"Did you two fight? It seems like your relationship with her started turning sour after I came back… Should I talk to Mrs. Zephyr about it? At least try to explain things a little."
Christopher looked up at her and said almost emotionlessly, "She's very clear about what's going on. There's no need to explain things to her."
Nicole said nothing more about that and changed the topic.
This was clearly a case of malicious and unfair competition.
"Stop looking at your computer. I'm getting a headache over work, not to mention you…" Claire held Amelia's hand. "Just focus on your own work. I can deal with my own issues. I've mortgaged the villa in the suburbs. That will last us for a while. Once I get better, I'll think of another way."
Amelia tightened her grip on her laptop.
"Mortgage? Don't we have investment funds?"
"That's not enough for a large-scale project like this one. It might have been enough in the past, but with so many of our major suppliers jumping ship, we need even more funds to secure new suppliers."
Claire sounded exhausted at the mention of these things.
Amelia took a deep breath.
Tania was bent on scheming against Ascent Corporation and driving them to desperation.
The woman had wanted to usurp her mother's position as Jonathan Sinclair's wife, but Jonathan dragged his feet in getting a divorce, all because of Ascent Corporation.
