Chapter 169
Amelia was just glad that she had the chance to make new decisions.
In this life, she made the right decision to shift her focus from being a housewife to pursuing her passion in her career. Her life was now moving in a completely different direction compared to her past life.
She felt grateful for this second chance.
Thankfully, she didn’t end up chased out of the house, homeless with nowhere to go and Evelyn in tow, completely helpless to strike back.
That would be utter humiliation worse than death.
A woman should have her own career and not be trapped in the clutches of a cold, heartless man.
Claire slumped back on the couch, looking crestfallen. She felt extremely guilty, especially for burdening Amelia.
Amelia didn’t mind it and comforted her mom, saying that things would only get better from here.
She transferred 25 million dollars to Ascent Corporation and left five million dollars for herself for daily spending.
Over the next three days, Amelia dove headfirst into her work..
She had been keeping her eyes on Ascent Corporation’s operations and making sure that all was going smoothly.
Over these three days, she never saw Christopher and Nicole. Even the air she breathed in felt fresher.
She had just left a meeting when she received a call from Dorothy.
Dorothy lamented over the phone, “Mia, have you been busy with work lately? You haven’t had the time to even
call me.”
“Well…” Amelia said with pursed lips. “I’ve been rather busy at work recently.”
“When will you have time to come back for a meal with me? Chris was discharged, but I don’t see you coming
back to visit.”
Dorothy really missed Amelia, and Amelia could sense her care and concern for her. In the Zephyr family, Dorothy had always been the one who cared most for her.
The old dear had never failed to call to show her concern for Amelia.
Amelia knew that Dorothy’s concern was genuine, and that she treated all her grandchildren equally, whether or not they were related by blood to her.
In truth, Amelia didn’t become closer to Dorothy only after getting married to Christopher. Even before she got married, she had grown up with Dorothy and her maternal grandmother.
Amelia looked at her calendar.

“Perhaps another day.”
Winona was always the one helping to pick up Evelyn from school.
Claire was recuperating at home after getting discharged from the hospital and occasionally checked in on Ascent Corporation’s progress.
Amelia, worried about her mom’s condition, reminded her mom not to tire or stress herself out.
Things had been overwhelming these past few days, with everything happening all at once. Amelia really couldn’t make time for Dorothy.
Dorothy fell silent before sighing softly.
“I’ll have someone send Evelyn to Whitmore Manor tonight. I do miss her. It’s the weekend tomorrow, and I’ll help you take care of her for two days. Since you’ve been so busy recently, I’ll help you watch her.”
Amelia fell silent for a moment.
Nicole took care of Nathan at their marital home and never went back to Whitmore Manor.
It was just Dorothy and Richard at Whitmore Manor, which meant that things there were usually quiet and peaceful.
Amelia didn’t mind Dorothy spending time with Evelyn. She had always been good to Evelyn, always giving Evelyn the best in everything.
Evelyn adored Dorothy, too. Each time they spent the night at Whitmore Manor, Evelyn would always sleep with Dorothy.
“Sure.”
When she used to be up to her ears in work, Dorothy would often help to take care of Evelyn. She didn’t need to worry with Dorothy around.
“I’ll pick Evelyn up from Whitmore Manor on Sunday night,” Amelia said.
Dorothy grinned from ear to ear at Amelia’s agreement. “I finally have someone to keep me company!”
After hanging up, Amelia continued burying herself in her work.
She was intent on finishing up the system over the weekend, during which Evelyn would be at Whitmore Manor.
The government tender was just around the corner, and time was running out. They had to make sure they were fully prepared for it.
She also had to keep a close watch on some of Ascent Corporation’s partners and the progress of their projects.
Amelia was busy all the way till Saturday night.
When it was about time, Amelia gave Cyrus a call. With the divorce petition in hand, she was ready to go to court
with it.
At about ten o’clock on Saturday night, Amelia was still busy at work when a call came from Whitmore Manor.

She heard Lucia’s anxious voice over the phone.
“Evelyn is injured. Come to the hospital right away!”
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat as she stood up, her hand trembling.
“What?” She forced herself to stay calm. “How did Evelyn get hurt?”
“Chris and Nicole brought Nathan and Evelyn rock-climbing today. Evelyn accidentally fell from a height and into the water. She’s running a high fever now and is currently hospitalized at Northon Central Hospital.”
Amelia’s heart sank.
She could feel her blood freeze.
Her body started shaking uncontrollably. After hanging up the phone, she grabbed her bag and rushed out of the house.
