Chapter 31
But Evelyn had done well today. Would Christopher praise her?
Amelia stopped short when she saw Christopher blocking the driver’s side door. She looked straight at him. “Do you need something?”
His gaze dropped to her hand, bare of a wedding ring, and he coldly said, “Come home with me.”
“Did you hit your head and forget?”
Amelia lifted her chin. She was ready to bring up the divorce papers, but with Evelyn right there, she didn’t want to argue in front of her.
She drew in a steadying breath. “Move.”
“You’re still not satisfied with how I handled things today?” Christopher’s tone was mild, almost as if he were commenting on the weather.
Amelia snorted and set what she was holding on the hood of the car. Then, she turned to him and said, “Do you really think what you did was some kind of favor to Evie? The truth is, Nathan was in the wrong. He accused her of cheating, and he was the one who shoved her first. You can’t keep letting your bias for Nathan blind you to right and wrong.”
Christopher calmly met her gaze. “And you don’t think Nate turned out this way because of your poor parenting? If you had treated him and Evie the same, would they really be so different now?” 1
Amelia actually laughed at that.
So, after all her years of raising the children, running the household, giving and giving until she had nothing left, this was what he thought of her.
“Christopher, the one who treated them differently from the start was you.’
He crossed his arms and smirked. “So this is really about you being jealous that I took Nate to meet Nikki, isn’t it? Nate getting close to Nikki was inevitable. As long as you’re willing, he’s still your son. But you shouldn’t be taking it out on Nikki, and certainly not on Nate.”
Amelia froze, then smirked mockingly.
So in the end, she was the one being unreasonable? He had really come to confront her on behalf of Nicole and Nathan?
Yes, Nathan was Nicole’s child. Of course he would be close to her.
But that was never what Amelia cared about.
What mattered to her was how Christopher treated her and Evelyn. He had never once truly cared about either of them.
In her past life, Amelia had lived hoping for just one glance from Christopher, forever doing things to get his
attention.
Now, she no longer cared.

Whatever he had with Nicole, it had nothing to do with her anymore, and she couldn’t be bothered to argue.
It was pointless.
Christopher noticed her silence. After a moment, he spoke again. “The bracelet Grandma had made for Evie just arrived. Come back with me tonight to pick it up.”
Amelia said flatly, “I’ll contact Grandma myself and have her mail it to me.’
Right now, the last place she wanted to go was the Zephyr family’s residence, Whitmore Manor.
The only one in that household who had ever truly cared for her and Evelyn was Christopher’s grandmother, Dorothy Stone. Dorothy had been her grandmother’s dearest friend. With her grandmother gone, the old lady had treated Amelia like her own granddaughter, loving her without reservation.
However, there were so many things Amelia kept from her. She didn’t want to burden someone at Dorothy’s age with more worries.
The one time Christopher had stepped in to help her mother’s company, it had only been because Dorothy personally pressured him into doing it.
“Great-grandma?” Evelyn tugged on Amelia’s sleeve, her soft little voice breaking through her thoughts.” Mommy, it’s been so long since I’ve seen Great-grandma. I miss her.”
Christopher said, “Don’t tell me your daughter understands better than you do. Grandma had that bracelet made for Evie. You really won’t take her to see her?”
Amelia looked down at Evelyn and frowned. “I got it.”
Christopher asked, “Where are you staying? I’ll have my secretary bring your car over.”
Amelia quickly refused. “That won’t be necessary. I’ll drive myself.”
Once upon a time, if she had the chance to ride in Christopher’s car back to Whitmore Manor, she would have been thrilled.
Now, she avoided it like the plague.
Christopher’s eyes narrowed slightly as he studied her cold, rejecting expression.
“Then Evie will ride with me.”
