“I think it’s because you’ve been worn out taking care of the kids at home. Chris doesn’t seem to care about you at all.”
At the mention of Christopher, Amelia pursed her lips. “He’s busy with work.”
She didn’t want to tell Dorothy about the looming divorce.
In her last life, three days after Evelyn’s death, Christopher still hadn’t even realized she was gone.
On the very first day after Evelyn’s passing, Dorothy came to their home, urging her and Christopher to attend a family banquet. That was when Amelia had told her the marriage was over.
She never mentioned Evelyn’s death, nor how cold and empty that marriage had truly been. But the word ” divorce” alone had been enough. Dorothy had understood then how badly Christopher had treated her, and the guilt nearly crushed her. She had fallen ill, bedridden, and never recovered.
Dorothy had been her grandmother’s closest friend, so Amelia treated her as if she were her own grandmother.
She could never let something like that happen again. If she had to tell Dorothy, it would have to come in a slow and careful manner.
Dorothy sighed. “You’re too easy on him. That’s why he’s grown more and more neglectful of home.”
Amelia bit back a laugh. If she had been able to control Christopher, their marriage would never have ended up like this. Men only tolerated being managed when they cared about the woman. If they didn’t, then her place in his life meant nothing at all.
Dorothy opened a delicate little box and handed it to Evelyn. “This is from me and your maternal great- grandmother.”
Evelyn accepted it with both hands, her smile bright. “Thank you, Great-grandma. Thank you, Great- grandmother.”
Amelia froze. Her grandmother?
She had been gone for years.
Dorothy’s gaze softened as she looked at Amelia. “Your grandmother and I grew up together. We went through every stage of life side by side. From school, marriage, and raising children. She left this world before me, and she never got the chance to meet Evie. We found this emerald together after searching the mountains for a month. Before she passed, she told me to have it made into a bracelet for Evie.”
Amelia’s grandmother, Adelaide Miller, had once been an expert in minerals and had spent most of her life in the mountains. She had a taste for adventure, and Dorothy loved going along with her.
“The bracelet took longer to make than I expected. Evie is already four now, and it took this long for the designer to come up with something I was satisfied with. Children’s bracelets are small, and she won’t be able to wear them anymore once she grows up. So, I had two made. One for now, and one for when she’s older.”
Amelia’s throat tightened. “That was very thoughtful of you.”

“It was your grandmother’s wish. A little girl should be spoiled as she grows. When she heard you were marrying into my family, she was overjoyed. She thought you would finally be safe, that no one here would dare mistreat you.”
Dorothy’s expression dimmed. “If she could see from the other side that you haven’t been happy here, I wouldn’t know how to face her.”
Her voice grew heavy with regret. “I’m old now, and useless. I’ve let you suffer. You never even come to me when you’ve been wronged.”
Amelia knew what Dorothy was doing. The older woman was reminding her that she had someone to lean on, that she didn’t have to carry everything alone.
In the past, Amelia hadn’t wanted to trouble her.
Now, she no longer saw the point.
“I-”
“What kind of mistreatment could my wife possibly suffer?”
Amelia had barely opened her mouth before Christopher interrupted her.
He strode through the doorway with a small smile on his lips, then sat down beside her without hesitation. He took her hands in his and gently rubbed them, his expression warm, and his voice carried a hint of indulgence.
“Complaining about me to Grandma again?”
In front of Dorothy, Christopher always played the role of the perfect husband.
Amelia frowned and tried to pull her hand free, but his grip was strong and unyielding.
He leaned closer, his voice low. “Don’t upset Grandma.”
Dorothy turned to Evelyn. “Evie, aren’t you happy to see your father? Go on, let him hold you.”
Christopher’s eyes softened as he looked at his daughter. He crouched slightly, his arms opening wide, with a gentle smile on his face. “Come here, sweetie. Let Daddy see if you’ve gotten heavier lately.”
