Evelyn’s heart skipped a beat.

For a moment, she almost wanted to go. Christopher never acted like this.

Whenever they came to visit Dorothy, Nathan was always there too. He would cling to Christopher and always be the one in his arms.

But now…

Evelyn bit her lip, then turned quickly and wrapped her arms around the old lady. “No. I haven’t seen Great- grandma in forever. I just want her to hold me.”

She buried her face into the old woman’s chest, her little voice soft and spoiled.

It made Dorothy laugh with joy. Evelyn was so easy to love, and every move and gesture she made went straight

to the heart.

Christopher showed no trace of displeasure at her refusal. His expression remained calm, and he simply lowered his hands as if it didn’t matter.

Dorothy looked at Amelia. “It’s not often you come back here, so why not stay the night? I’d love some extra time with Evie. I hardly see her these days, while Nate is always around.”

Dorothy loved having her granddaughter by her side. She had waited a long time for her return and wasn’t about to let her go so easily.

Amelia replied softly, “I’ll bring Evie again next time. Things have been busy lately—”

She had every intention of refusing. She didn’t want to stay at the manor too long.

“If you’re busy, then let Chris take Evie to school tomorrow. He’s here at the manor tonight.”

Amelia fell silent.

Christopher didn’t care for Evelyn. How could she possibly trust him with her?

“I’ll take a day off,” she said at last.

Christopher glanced at her, but he didn’t say anything.

“Where’s Nathan?” Dorothy asked.

Christopher smiled. “He’s with Nikki.”

“Nikki?” Dorothy paused, recalling. “Such a pitiful girl. Make sure she comes by more often when she has the time.”

Christopher nodded. “Of course.”

Amelia rose to her feet and said, “I’ll go pack up.”

She glanced at Evelyn, who hopped down from Dorothy’s lap immediately. “I’ll go with Mommy and help her

pack. Then I can come back and play with you, Great-grandma.”

Dorothy smiled and nodded. “Tonight we’ll have dinner together. Nikki went up the mountain and brought back a real wild chicken. You need a proper meal to take care of yourself.”

Then, she looked at Christopher. “Why didn’t you invite Nikki to eat with us?”

Christopher chuckled. “She didn’t want to trouble you.”

“Trouble me? Nonsense. Next time, have her come.”

Nicole had grown up alongside Christopher, and her bond with the Zephyr family was natural and close. Amelia had heard her name countless times since marrying in, and she knew it wasn’t her place to interfere. They were childhood friends.

In this life, she chose to step back.

Amelia didn’t listen to their continued chatter. She turned and left.

Even though she was preparing to leave the Zephyr family, a tight knot of frustration sat in her chest. Years of effort and striving felt almost laughable now.

The more Nicole’s name came up, the deeper Amelia’s regret grew. She had wasted so much time on someone who was never worth it.

When it was time for dinner, Stephanie and Lucia were already seated in the dining room, and Christopher was there as well.

Stephanie glanced at Christopher. “I heard Amelia took Evie to stay elsewhere. Is she trying to start a divorce and split your assets?”

Christopher’s expression stayed calm, and he looked utterly unconcerned. “Just gossip.”

“If she’s not divorcing you, why is she acting so high and mighty in front of me?”

Christopher gave his sister a steady, unreadable look. “What did she do this time to upset you?”

“What? Nothing at all.”

Stephanie would never openly mistreat Amelia in front of Christopher. As the eldest son of the Zephyr family and now a rising star in the business world, he was the family’s greatest asset.

She wouldn’t risk making him unhappy.

“I only asked her to watch my kid and maybe help with the cooking. But she really thinks of herself as someone great just because she’s your wife. While we were busy in the kitchen, she didn’t lift a finger.”
