Chapter 37
Christopher’s brow furrowed even deeper when he saw Evelyn like this.
“Get the family doctor to treat you,” he said sharply.

Amelia was in the shower, but a vague unease lingered in her chest.
When she finished, she wrapped herself in a towel and stepped toward the bathroom door, ready to change into her pajamas.
The instant she opened it, her body froze.
Christopher was there, sitting on the edge of the sofa, his face cold and unreadable.
When he heard the bathroom door, his gaze shifted to her.
Steam filled the room, wrapping her in a soft haze. The towel clung to her, leaving her smooth shoulders exposed, the heat lending her an ethereal, almost dangerous beauty.
His eyes were intensely predatory, and the faint, knowing curve of his lips made it worse.
Amelia snapped back to reality and slammed the bathroom door shut, cutting off his view. “What are you doing here?”
His eyes stayed fixed on the door. “I’ve seen every part of you, and we have a kid together. Is this really necessary?”
His tone was calm, and there was even a hint of teasing in it.
Amelia had no patience for it now.
It had been the same in her previous life. Married, yet their daily interactions were as cold as strangers. Then, whenever certain moments approached, he became unbearably intimate, pulling her heart to the brink every single day.
Back then, Amelia had secretly looked forward to those moments that made her cheeks flush and her heart race.
Now, she felt nothing but disgust.
Her voice was icy. “Get out. I want to change.”
Christopher didn’t react to her tone. He stood to leave and said, “Evie got hurt. Come out when you’re done.”
When Amelia heard that, her chest tightened.
She rushed out, quickly changing into her clothes, and dashed out of the room.
In the corridor, Christopher stood quietly, smoking. The smoke curled around him, blurring his expression, making his attitude impossible to read.
“Where’s Evie?” she asked.

Christopher casually flicked the ash from his cigarette. “Our master bedroom.”

When Amelia arrived at the master bedroom, she saw that Evelyn’s hand had been burned, though fortunately the area wasn’t large.
Amelia’s heart ached. “What happened?”
Evelyn smiled faintly and recounted the incident. “Mommy, I’m fine. I just accidentally ran into Daddy, and it looks like Daddy got hurt too.”
Amelia didn’t even pay Christopher much mind.
“Don’t worry about me, Mommy. It doesn’t hurt at all now. The doctor put medicine on it already, and said it won’t leave a scar,” Evelyn said in her soft, innocent voice, trying to reassure her.
But Amelia could see her daughter’s eyes were still red and swollen. She had clearly been crying.
Christopher never liked Evelyn. If she had run into him, of course he would have scolded her.
Amelia’s chest tightened painfully. “My poor baby, you must have been so upset.”
“I wasn’t.” Evelyn shook her head quickly. “I’m really fine. Mommy, don’t be sad, okay? Don’t cry.”
Just then, there was a soft knock at the door.
She turned to see Christopher leaning against the frame, watching her quietly. “Step outside for a minute.”
“Mommy, go ahead. I’m sleepy, so I’m going to bed,” Evelyn said.
Evelyn had climbed into the master bed and tucked herself in neatly.
Amelia exhaled slowly. At this moment, she didn’t want to talk too much with Christopher, but she knew something needed to be said.
She straightened Evelyn’s blankets one last time, then stepped out and closed the door behind her.
Christopher stood in the hallway, his gaze cool and steady on her.
Amelia said, “Once she’s asleep, I’ll take her to her room. You’ve got something to say?”
“Yes.” Christopher’s tone gave nothing away. “Tomorrow, you’re going to apologize to Nikki.”
