Reborn Without You (Amelia and Christopher) novel Chapter 36

Chapter 36

Amelia glanced at the bowl of chicken soup Christopher had set on the table, steam still curling from it.

She looked away, her tone cool. “My resignation has already been processed.”

Christopher sat down. “I can reject it.”

Amelia frowned in confusion. Christopher was the CEO, and he never interfered with HR matters. Besides, she had officially left days ago, and now he was saying he didn’t agree?

She was growing increasingly irritated by his high-handed attitude.

“The resignation is legally effective,” she said.

Christopher’s gaze was fixed on her, and his lips curled into a faint, mocking smile. “You really think the Zephyr Group can’t accommodate someone like you? Do you honestly belleve you and Evie can get by just fine out there on your own?”

Amelia drew a deep breath, unwilling to waste energy on such meaningless arguments.

When she stayed silent, Christopher calmly continued, “Grandma asked me to bring you this chicken soup. She said you can’t skip dinner.

“Drink it while it’s hot.”

Amelia didn’t even hesitate. “No, thank you.”

Dorothy had always tried to push them together, and Christopher tended to follow her advice. In her previous life, Amelia would have felt flattered, maybe even pleased. Now, the idea of playing the doting wife with him felt exhausting and repulsive.

Christopher didn’t flinch at her refusal. His expression remained neutral, his voice steady. “You really want to make Grandma unhappy?”

She looked at him coolly. “That’s your grandmother. If you want to please her, drink it yourself, or pour it out. Pretend I’ve had it. I’ll play along.”

Christopher’s gaze pinned her, his presence radiating an almost intimidating authority. “Amelia, I don’t have time to play these childish games with you.”

He had spent years at the top, and his presence alone carried the weight and dominance of someone who had always held power. He was always calm and reserved, keeping his temper tightly controlled most of the time.

With most people, he was calm and measured, but with her, his words and presence could cut sharply, leaving a deep sting,

Amelia pursed her lips.

This was clearly as far as Christopher’s patience would go.

She set down what she was holding and stood, meeting his gaze directly, challenging his authority. “I didn’t ask you to bring me this soup. Whoever brought it can deal with it.”

She didn’t believe Christopher could actually physically hurt her here and now.

His gaze grew even colder.

Amelia let out a short, derisive laugh, refusing to let it bother her. She grabbed her pajamas and left, leaving Christopher alone in the room.

She no longer cared about his moods. Whether he was pleased or angry was of no concern to her.

Amelia went to Evelyn’s room.

At the manor, Evelyn’s room was smaller than Nathan’s, but it would be just right for the two of them to share.

Amelia went in to take a shower.

Meanwhile, Christopher stepped out of the room carrying the chicken soup.

Just then, Evie came rushing in looking for Amelia and collided straight into him, right in his arms.

The impact sent the bowl of soup flying and crashing to the ground.

The scalding liquid ran down Christopher’s hands, and Evelyn instinctively twisted her head, raising her hand to shield herself.

The searing heat shot through her tiny hand, pain stabbing straight to her heart. Evelyn felt her chest tighten and let out a muffled whimper, biting her lip to keep from crying out.

Her eyes watered from the pain, and she flailed her hand back and forth, trying desperately to ease the burn.

When she noticed Christopher’s hand had been scalded too, panic and helplessness filled her gaze.

Christopher frowned, taking her tiny hand in his. Her soft, fair skin was bright red, and it was a shocking sight.

His voice was sharp and chilling. “Can’t you watch where you’re going?”

Evelyn pulled her hand back and retreated to the corner, trembling through the pain. She lowered her head carefully, tears slipping silently down her cheeks, voice choked as she whispered, “I-I’m sorry… I didn’t see…”
