Chapter 39
Christopher said, “I’m skipping breakfast.”
Amelia said nothing.
In the end, to avoid drawing Dorothy’s attention, Christopher got into the car with her.
He settled into the passenger seat and spoke as if it were natural. “Take me to the company.”
At 6’3″, he was a giant in Amelia’s compact car. His legs barely fit, and he kept leaning forward like he didn’t quite belong.
“I’m not your personal driver,” Amelia snapped.
“Nikki will be there. You need to apologize to her.”
Amelia sneered. Of course-that was why he was riding in her car. He wanted to make sure his childhood friend didn’t get upset. He was basically forcing Amelia to apologize.
If they weren’t still at Whitmore Manor with Dorothy watching, Amelia really would have kicked him out of the
car.
Amelia’s frustration turned into laughter as she opened her mouth to retort.
“Mommy,” Evelyn’s voice came from the backseat, cutting her off. “If we don’t leave soon, I’m going to be late.”
Amelia suddenly remembered Evelyn was there. She didn’t want to reason or argue with Christopher, so she floored the car straight to the kindergarten.
Once Evelyn was safely inside, Christopher glanced at Amelia. “Evie is very talented in math. Have you considered putting her in a class with Nate?”
“No need.”
She would nurture Evelyn herself.
Her profile was hard, edged with coldness. It was as if she didn’t want to spend another second near him.
Then, someone rapped on the car window.
“Chris, it’s really you!” Nicole raised an eyebrow at him. “I’m just dropping Nate off at school. Have you and Mia made up?”
Christopher didn’t answer.
Nicole then turned her smile on Amelia. “Mia, mind if I borrow Chris for a bit? I have some work stuff to discuss with him. You don’t mind, do you?”
Christopher’s gaze was steady as he looked at Amelia. Her expression stayed icy, and she had no intention of apologizing.
“Don’t you have something to say to her?” Christopher asked as he opened the car door.

As soon as the door shut behind him, Amelia slammed the gas pedal and drove off.
Nicole patted Christopher on the shoulder, laughing heartily. “No wonder you stayed quiet just now. Looks like you still haven’t smoothed things over. Need me to give you a few pointers?”
“No need. It’ll work itself out in a couple of days.”
Amelia drove straight to the underground parking at Nova Nine Technologies. When she stepped out of the car, Jasper appeared almost instantly.
“So punctual,” Amelia said, looking at him. “Someone would think you put a tracker on me.”
Jasper let out a low chuckle. “I figured you’d be here any minute.”
“Mia!” Winona came barreling toward her, throwing her arms around Amelia. “You’re finally here! Now we can go conquer, I don’t know, eight hundred male models together!”
Amelia gently pried Winona off her. “Sure, we’ll start tonight.”
Jasper cleared his throat. “Keep it together. This is a professional setting.”
Winona was in the same field, though her family was wealthy, so she mostly held a nominal position at Nova Nine Technologies, just enough to satisfy appearances.
She linked arms with Amelia. “Come on, let’s check out your new workspace.”
The two of them walked through Nova Nine Technologies, which was a massive place. All the industrial and testing facilities were top-notch, capable of independently developing satellites.
Jasper looked at Amelia. “So? How do you like the work environment?”
“Not as fancy as Institute 511, but it’s on par with any big company. I should be thanking you for giving me a chance despite everything,” Amelia replied.
“You’re not giving it for free. Your skills earned you a stake. I expect you to lead Nova Nine to even greater heights.”
Winona couldn’t help but roll her eyes. “You two are so familiar with each other already, and we’re all friends here. Enough with the mutual flattery.”
Jasper just smiled, then asked, “Want to check out the cleanroom?”
“Sure.”
At that moment, an assistant stepped forward. “Mr. Langley, Ms. Randall has arrived.”
