Chapter 45

The marriage wasn’t even officially over, and yet Christopher and Nicole were already living together?

Even though she had prepared herself, Amelia still felt like her limbs were weighed down with lead.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?”

Nicole moved her hand and glanced toward the door. In that instant, her eyes met Amelia’s.

Seeing her, Nicole immediately sat up in bed. “I’m dropping Nate off at kindergarten tomorrow, so I’m staying the night. You don’t mind, right, Mia?”

Amelia didn’t respond. She took a deep breath, studying the layout of the master bedroom.

The wedding photos by the headboard were gone. Even the large bed she had carefully chosen had been replaced with a solid wood red frame.

Noticing her gaze, Nicole laughed brightly and offered an explanation. “Chris said you’re not coming back, so I can arrange things however I like. We’re all family here, and you’re welcome to share the bed too.” 1

Amelia listened to these outrageous words, blinking in disbelief.

“I don’t care,” Amelia said with a mocking twist of her lips. “Sleep however you want. I’m just here to grab something and leave.”

With that, she stepped further into the room, opening the second drawer of the vanity.

However, it was empty. The brooch was gone.

Amelia frowned and rifled through the other drawers, but still found nothing. When she looked up, her eyes landed on a used condom lying on the desk. Her chest tightened.

If they had already gone that far, why hadn’t he signed the divorce papers yet? Why was he willing to let Nicole remain a mistress?

Amelia exhaled slowly and calmly looked away.

Nicole noticed her gaze and saw the condom on the desk. She quickly spoke up. “Mia, don’t get the wrong idea. Nathan found it and opened it while playing. I just forgot to put it away.”

Amelia sneered.

If she believed that, she’d have to be out of her mind.

The next second, her eyes landed on a familiar folder. It was the one that contained her divorce papers with Christopher.

She opened it. Aside from her signature, nothing had changed.

Amelia let out a bitter, mocking laugh.

What was this supposed to mean?

“Mrs. Zephyr? You’re finally back!”

Anna had heard movement upstairs and had come to check.

During the days Amelia was away, Nathan had been a handful. No matter what Anna did, nothing seemed to satisfy him. Seeing Amelia return finally eased her tense nerves.

Amelia replied, “Yeah. I just came to grab something.”

Anna noticed the folder in her hands and asked immediately, “Is this document important? I saw it in the trash last time and thought it might be useful, so I saved it.”

The trash?

“I had asked you to give this to Christopher.”

Anna nodded. “I handed it to Mr. Zephyr. I thought it must have accidentally fallen into the trash. If it’s useless, I’ll just throw it away now.”

Amelia sneered. For a moment, she felt utterly foolish. Christopher might have looked at the divorce agreement, but he clearly hadn’t taken it seriously. No matter what she asked for, all she ever got from him was indifference.

She took a deep breath and tossed the folder onto the table.

“Leave it here. Have you seen the brooch in my drawer?”

“No,” Anna shook her head.

Nicole glanced over. “Mia, is something missing? Want me to help look for it?”

Amelia ignored her and turned to leave. She needed to search her things more carefully. She remembered taking the brooch when she left.

“Mrs. Zephyr! Where are you going?” Anna called and followed right behind.

Nicole leaned over the vanity, casually flipping through the folder. When she saw it was divorce papers, she smiled.
