Amelia opened the car door and stepped out, then the driver got in and drove away without a word.

She looked at the brooch in her hand, clutching the little box tightly, feeling a weight in her chest. Getting the brooch back gave her a sense of closure.

She carried the brooch upstairs.

Winona looked surprised. “He just gave it to you? Just like that?”

Pretty efficient.

Wasn’t it supposed to be a way to manipulate her, to hold power over her with the brooch?

“Things like this are worthless in their eyes,” Amelia said lightly. “It means nothing to them, and if they kept it, I’d only end up pestering them for it.”

Amelia let out a faint, ironic laugh. Rather than have her hounding them for the brooch, it was simpler for them to just return it.

Nicole had handed it over decisively, and Amelia hadn’t expected Christopher to act so fast either.

After all, he had seemed so indifferent yesterday, like her words hadn’t even registered.

“It’s unsettling how smoothly it all went,” Winona said, shivering slightly. Neither of them strikes me as the harmless type. You’d better be careful.”

Amelia smiled softly. “I’m divorcing him. Whatever happens, it won’t affect me anymore.”

Nicole didn’t need to rush things, either. Even without her pushing for it, Christopher would probably handle the divorce quickly on his own.

After all, how could he stand having his little sweetheart sneaking around like a secret lover, hidden from the world?

“What are you two talking about?” Jasper came over with a coffee cup in hand, his eyes on Amelia. “There’s a dinner with a business partner tonight. Come along with me, okay? Let’s go over some technical issues. If anything comes up, you can let me know right away.”

Amelia nodded. “Okay, but I need to take Evie home first.”

She didn’t want to trouble her mother. Claire was already stretched too thin.

Winona paused for a moment. “There are going to be plenty of dinners like this in the future. Maybe you can hire a nanny for Evie once things settle down. It will make life a lot easier.”

The workplace was ruthless, and for women with children, it was even harsher,

Especially in the future, when Amelia would be a single mom, balancing career and family would be a constant struggle.

Of course, a nanny wasn’t cheap, and finding a reliable one was never easy.

Amelia thought for a moment. “I’ll consider it.”

“You just go to the dinner. I’ll take care of your little one.” Winona’s eyes softened as she added, “If you’re too busy, let me handle taking care of the kid.”

She wanted Amelia to throw herself into her career, but she also didn’t want her to worry endlessly about her child.

Right now, Evelyn was the most important person in Amelia’s life. She needed to be strong so she could be a solid support for Evelyn.

Amelia nodded. “Thank you for handling this.”

The dinner was at a restaurant named Whispering Pines, which had a good atmosphere. It was quiet, well- equipped, with everything needed for dining and entertainment.

It was perfect for business meetings.

They had reserved a private room. Amelia and Jasper arrived first, while the others were fashionably late.

Amelia paused slightly when she saw who had come in.

It was Nicole’s mother, Tania.

Tania froze for a brief second as well, not expecting Amelia, but people in business were always shrewd.

Tania smiled politely and greeted them, “Hello.”

Jasper led the conversation.

Amelia kept her personal grudges separate from business, and her expression remained calm the entire time.

She wasn’t skilled at small talk in these formal settings. She was better suited to diving into technical work than maneuvering in boardrooms.

When she had accompanied Christopher to similar business dinners, she had no role in the negotiations. Her only job had been to drink alongside him.

Here, it was the same. Drinking was her only talent.

When they toasted Jasper, Amelia stepped in to handle the drinking for him.

Tania glanced at Amelia, letting out a faint, almost imperceptible laugh. She wondered what made Amelia think she was impressive.

Nicole had applied to Nova Nine Technologies as a senior tech specialist, while Amelia was just a lowly assistant, fit only to pour drinks and play the part of a charming sidekick.
