Chapter 81
Winona watched Amelia with a twinge of pity.
After all these years in the Zephyr family, Amelia knew exactly how power worked. She understood its weight and its reach. She also understood Christopher’s true nature, but she had never fully accepted that he didn’t love her. She had always held onto hope.
After all, they shared a sweet, obedient daughter, and she had cared for the child entrusted to Christopher by a friend. She had always believed her devotion could move him.
But now, in the face of Christopher’s coldness, all of Amelia’s heartfelt efforts seemed cheap and ridiculous. Years of love and marriage, gone to waste.
No matter how much she poured her heart into him, a man who didn’t love her would never give her more than a passing glance.
Near the end of her workday, the security department called Amelia.
“Ms. Sinclair, someone is here to pick you up. He says he’s your husband.”
Amelia furrowed her brow. She was about to say she didn’t have a husband, then realized something.
After hanging up, she went straight downstairs. Outside the company, Christopher’s Maybach sat quietly under the shade of a tree.
Amelia pressed her lips together and walked over to knock on the window.
The rear window rolled down, revealing his indifferent face. He looked at her calmly.
“Get in.”
“What’s this about?”
Christopher had one hand on his knee, and he straightened his clothes with careful elegance. His voice was steady and unhurried as he replied, “It’s about the thing you want.”
He was brief, clearly not in the mood for small talk.
Amelia thought about it momentarily, then opened the car door and got in.
The fact that he had come all this way meant he really had brought it. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have bothered to show up.
Once she settled in, the driver in the front seat, showing perfect awareness, got out and closed the door behind him, leaving them a private space to talk.
The space felt small and intimate. With only the two of them inside, it was so quiet that they could hear each other’s breathing. Even with a seat between them, Amelia could catch his faint, lingering scent.
She had once loved that scent. Now, it only brought a bitter ache to her chest.
She drew a steady breath and asked, “Where is it?”
Christopher didn’t seem to want to linger, either. He simply handed her a small, delicate box. The weight of it in her hand was substantial. She hadn’t expected him to give it to her so easily.

She didn’t think there was anything left to discuss between them.

Their relationship was worse than that of strangers, and it was bitterly ironie for a husband and wife reduced to this level of estrangement.
