Chapter 389
Sierra’s heart tightened, but her face stayed calm as she faced John. “You keep bringing this up. Do you want me to leave?”
“No.” John’s dark eyes were completely serious. “I’m just scared.”
“I’m not sure yet if I’m free that day.” Sierra still did not give him a straight answer. As she spoke, she did not dare to meet his eyes. “I’m going with my mom to get the divorce certificate, then we’ll go shopping for a few things. I’ll let you know if I have time when everything’s done.”
“Alright,” John said.
Sierra gave a quiet nod. She turned around, about to leave.
“Sierra.” John pulled her into his arms from behind, resting his chin in her nape. “Don’t lie to me and don’t leave me.”
Sierra pouted quietly.
So… He knew?
“When I lose my temper, I don’t know what I might do.” John’s warm breath brushed her ear, sending a small shiver down her spine. “I don’t think you want Holly and Nicholas to get dragged into anything because of you either.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Sierra turned to face him.
“Last night, I dreamed of you leaving me without even saying goodbye,” John said, half–truth and half–lie. “I was furious.”
Sierra had no confidence about it, so she could only use anger to cover the feelings that were almost spilling over.
“What do your dreams have to do with me? If I dream you marry Pamela and have kids with her, am I supposed to come after you for that too?”
“I won’t marry her, and I won’t have any emotional ties to her,” John said, looking straight into her eyes. “What about you? Can you promise you won’t leave me?”
Sierra’s hands, hanging at her sides, grew damp with cold sweat.
Should she lie?
If she didn’t, he would definitely start to suspect something.
If she did, who knew how he would react later?
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” John felt her silence like a knife. “Are you really planning to leave?”
“No.” Sierra decided to lie. If she couldn’t even take the first step, there was no point in talking about anything after that. “I just don’t want to answer the same question over and over. Whatever answer I gave you before is still my answer now.”
John refused to let her dodge the question. “I want you to answer me directly.”
Sierra frowned slightly and looked at him.
“After your mom and Lucas finish the divorce, are you going to leave me?” John asked in a serious tone.
Sierra told him this kind of lie for the first time. “No.”
“Really?” John asked.
Sierra stepped around him and walked off. “Believe it or don’t.”
“I believe you,” John said.

And because he said he believed her, he really did.

That same night, he called and pulled back everyone he had been watching her. He told Forde that on the nineteenth, there was no need for close protection. They were to simply keep an eye on her from a distance and make sure she was safe.
The next day, when Kenneth heard about it, he called John. “Have you really pulled everyone back?”
John was working in the study, “Yeah.”
‘Aren’t you worried she’ll leave?” Kenneth asked,
“She promised me she wouldn’t,” John said, calmly working through the company’s business.
“Aren’t you afraid she’ll lie to you?” Kenneth asked.
