"I held those shares for so many years and enjoyed benefits that never should have belonged to me for free," Charlie said to Peter calmly. "Returning them is the right thing to do. Why would I be reluctant?"
"There's no one else here. You can stop with the acting now." Peter could not stand Charlie's hypocrisy.
Charlie's expression stayed calm. "I'm telling you nothing but the truth."
Peter cursed under his breath. He hated hypocrites like Charlie the most.
"Returning the shares to Sierra won't cost me much," Charlie said, as if he meant it. "Maxwell will still be the CEO of King Group, and I'll still be the head of the family. The person who'll lose out is you, since you have accomplished nothing."
Peter was furious. "Don't forget Sierra's relationship with John!"
"So what?" Charlie said.
"What if he interferes in the company's affairs?" Peter refused to believe that Charlie was not worried at all.
"Even if he does, he can't change anything. The company's CEO is elected by the shareholders," Charlie said calmly. "Sierra holds a lot of shares, true, but the other shareholders also hold plenty when added together. Compared to an outsider like John, they will trust Maxwell more."
Peter frowned. With what he knew about the shareholders, they did trust Maxwell. Even if Maxwell did not hold any shares, they would most likely still let him serve as King Group's CEO.
Charlie was the head of the family, and after Cyrus passed away, he would likely inherit quite a lot. The only one who truly risked being pushed out seemed to be Peter himself.
Without realizing it, Peter had fallen into Charlie's trap.
"You really think that?" Peter studied him.
Charlie did not say much. He only reminded him, "What happened today already upset Dad. If you want your life to be easier later, stop saying stupid things, and stop provoking Sierra."
Charlie didn't stay around and left after that.
Those words stirred up the darker side of Peter's heart. If things were really as what Charlie just said, then he absolutely could not let Sierra complete the task that was given to her.
During her five years of marriage, John had told her many stories about infighting in wealthy families, including plenty about people using underhanded methods for shares, power, and status.
Was Cyrus's illness really an accident?
"Have you recovered from that illness?" Sierra asked.
"There are still some lingering effects, but they're all minor. Nothing serious." Cyrus said it very naturally.
Sierra did not say anything else.
Although Cyrus was good to her, much of it came from guilt toward her mother. Some things were not appropriate for her to say, and besides, those were only her guesses.
"Don't worry." Cyrus thought she was worried and comforted her. "I may be old, but I'm still in decent health. Other than that serious illness at the time, I haven't had any other major illness throughout all the years."
