Chapter 463

“You didn’t. You just used her life to threaten me.” Nathan’s voice didn’t have much emotion in them.
“Then I’ll use my life to threaten you now. If you don’t bring Sierra back to the Lynch family and formally acknowledge her today, I’ll kill her,” Daniel said nonchalantly. “Can you do that?”
Nathan looked at him and didn’t answer.
Those were two completely different situations.
If he hadn’t broken up with Anna and forced her to abort the baby back then, Daniel really would have killed her.
“Nathan.”
It was rare for Daniel to stand beside him and speak so calmly. Over the years, the two of them had only contempt left for each other.
“You didn’t love Anna as much as you thought you did.”
Nathan gave him a side glance.
Daniel finally said what he had been keeping to himself all these years.
“Out of every possible choice, you picked the one that benefited you most.”
Nathan said nothing.
Too much time had passed. Daniel had slowly forgotten the truth of what happened back then, forgotten how he had cornered Nathan and had forced him to give in.
“Back then, you and Anna were the most capable of your generation.” Daniel looked at Nathan. “But you didn’t choose to stand beside her and fight. You chose to protect yourself.”
“Easy for you to say.” Nathan did not even want to explain.
“If you had been relentless enough back then to leave the Lynch family and go to the King family with her, the paths that would have been opened to you two would be easier than what you currently had,” Daniel said.
“You can only say that now because it’s all over.” Nathan’s expression didn’t change. “Did you forget how much the King family hated the Lynch family back then?”
Even if he had left the Lynch family and gone to the King family at the time, Cyrus would never have accepted him, what with how intense things were between the two families.
Everyone in the King family, other than Anna, would have likely assumed his falling out with the Lynches was just a ruse to get closer to them via Anna.
That had already been the best choice he could think of at the time. He could not drag Anna into the same mess and let his family use their lives to threaten her.
“You might not know this, but…” After thinking it over again and again, Daniel finally decided to tell Nathan the truth.
Nathan kept his eyes on the floor below. “Go on.”
“For your sake, Anna made a deal with her family. She would help them turn things around. Other than getting the shares that should have been hers, she also got Cyrus to accept you.” Daniel told Nathan what he knew. “Cyrus agreed.”
Nathan felt his heart skip a beat.
Daniel looked at him. “But at that time, you gave in and accepted the fiancee I arranged for you.”

Nathan felt as if something had slammed into his chest.
That day, Anna had told him excitedly that her father would accept him soon. But he had answered, “Anna, I’m getting engaged.
“If you hadn’t accepted the engagement I arranged, Cyrus would have already accepted you.” Daniel didn’t regret any of the choices he had made back then. “You wouldn’t need to walk the path I laid out for you, and Anna wouldn’t have been forced to leave Harbor City.”
Nathan shot Daniel a dark, unreadable look. He didn’t say another word and walked out of the banquet hall.
