“From now on, I’ll keep my promises too,” Kenneth said with complete seriousness. “I’ll do everything I said.”
John did not even bother to answer. He turned and went upstairs to call Tommy down for breakfast.
Kenneth hurried after him. “You don’t believe me?”
John’s attitude did not change. “Whatever makes you happy.”
“I’m serious,” Kenneth said.
“Serious about what?” Tommy opened the door, his eyes still heavy with sleepiness at this time.
“It’s time for breakfast,” John said.
Tommy nodded. “Oh.”
Kenneth looked at Tommy, then at John, his head full of questions. Wasn’t Tommy supposed to be living with Sierra? Why was he here? Or had John changed his mind halfway and brought him back?
That did not seem right, either. If Tommy had been taken by force, he would not be this calm.
Neither father nor son paid any attention to Kenneth’s confusion.
Once they sat down for breakfast, John said calmly, “After breakfast, I’ll send you back to Harbor City.”
Tommy paused in the middle of eating.
“I have to go overseas on a business trip tomorrow and I can’t take you with me,” John said, casually making up an excuse. After you’re back, listen to your mom and grandma. If anything comes up, call me.”
Tommy looked at him several times, then finally agreed. “Okay.”
“Why don’t I know you’re leaving on a business trip tomorrow?” Kenneth cut in.
“It concerns company secrets,” John said, still as sharp as ever. “Why would I let an outsider know about this?”
Kenneth fell silent.
Fine.
He was trying to be helpful, but all John did was give him the cold shoulder.

After breakfast, John sent Sierra a voice message to let her know Tommy was going back to Harbor City. “I’ll have someone take him home. No need to come to the airport.”
When Sierra got the message, she had just picked up her phone to check the time. She wanted to ask why Tommy was coming back so soon, but then realized there was no point.
John saw the message “Sierra is typing…“, but after waiting a while, no message came through. So he sent another message.
[I’ll take him to your villa. Lance will walk him in.]
Sierra replied at the same time: [Okay.]
The two messages appeared together.
Sierra felt somewhat conflicted seeing someone so capable of doing everything become so cautious.
She did not explain anything, and she did not tell him he did not need to be so cautious. Some distance between them was a good thing. That way, nothing that had happened before would happen again, and she would not have to worry about one thing

after another.
John thought the exact opposite.
Every time he tested the waters, he got the same answer. Sierra wanted nothing to do with him.
A little after eleven that morning, he brought Tommy back to Harbor City.
When they were almost at Sierra’s residence, John reminded Tommy in the back seat, “After you get out, don’t tell your mom I’m in the car too.”
For once, Tommy did not argue. “Okay.”
John patted Tommy’s head while he stayed quiet.
Five minutes later, the car stopped outside Sierra’s home.
