"Then, about what had just happened..." Sierra did not know how to put her feelings into words after seeing Nathan putting himself so low in front of Anna.
"Don't mind him." Anna saw right through her. Sierra was her daughter, after all. "Just think of him as someone working for us for free and happens to be delusional."
Sierra did not say much as she just nodded. "Fine."
She chose not to get involved in disputes between the two adults.
Her mother had more experience and was more capable than her, so she had always supported whatever choice her mother made.
"Now, let me hug you, my pride and joy," Anna said as she opened her arms, warmth and tenderness in her eyes.
Sierra froze, but that didn't stop Anna pulling her into her embrace.
Sierra went still for a second the moment that warmth wrapped around her. Her mother had just said she was her pride...
"You've worked so hard for the past few days," Anna said as she held Sierra tight. It hurt to watch her daughter exhausted like this. "Get some good rest from now on and relax. Don't get too stressed."
There were things she didn't say, but that didn't mean she did not care.
Anna had raised Sierra with all the love she could give, yet she had to watch her daughter go out into the world and weather one storm after another. The more Anna thought about it, the less she understood how Cyrus could have hardened his heart back then and forced her so ruthlessly just to get what he wanted.
But none of that mattered now.
She had Sierra now, the one family who mattered most to her.
"Okay," Sierra said.
"I want a hug too!" Tommy ran over and held out his little arms, looking cutely at them.
Sierra and Anna looked at him, smiled, and picked him up.
The family was all smiles in their warmth and happiness.
-
Ten minutes later…
Sierra was "kicked" out of that warm little circle.
Tommy pointed at the computer on the table and asked Anna, "Grandma, there's still one part I don't get. I tried a few times, but I still can't crack it."
"Let me teach you." Anna sat beside him, her fingers already typing on the keyboard. "This bug is buried pretty deep. We'll need to clear this part first, then we can dig deeper."
She had not seen him when she came out. The second she turned around, he was already there. She doubted anyone would not get scared by that.
"Sorry." Nathan sounded unusually sincere. "I usually stand outside the door and make myself invisible so I can show up the moment your mother needs me."
Sierra wanted to say something, then stopped. That did not sound like being invisible. It sounded more like...
She cut the thought off before it could go any further as it felt a little rude.
"Tommy has been learning how to hack from Anna this whole time." Nathan had heard part of the conversation inside and took the initiative to talk to her. "He has already made some progress."
Sierra gave a small nod.
That much was obvious. Those strings of code and those pages she could not understand must be something to do with computers.
"Sierra." Nathan looked at her, clearly wanting to say something.
Sierra looked up and met his eyes. Nathan slowly raised his hands. His dark eyes were full of mixed emotions.
"I'm proud to have a daughter like you. Can I give you a hug, too?"
