Regrets Come Too Late (Sierra and Johnny) novel Chapter 634

"Go straight ahead. Left, then left again, then right." Robin had memorized the layout, so he knew exactly where everything was.

"I'll go first. Wait over there for Boss." Lance ran off with a miserable expression on his face.

After he found the fire escape, he hurried back up to the second floor and slipped the note from his pocket into the changing room.

Afraid John might miss it, he even knocked twice.

By the time John picked up the note, Lance was already gone.

[Boss, Ms. Bell, don't worry. We'll explain everything to Tommy and make sure he doesn't worry.]

"Sit down and get some rest," John said as he crumpled the note into a ball. "I'll figure out how to get the door open."

If Sierra had not trusted him enough, then no matter how many excuses or witnesses there were, nothing they had done today would have cleared him of suspicion. The timing of the locked door, the lack of signal in the room, even this note...

It all looked too much like something he would have arranged.

"It's fine," Sierra said; understanding what they were trying to do, she could not be bothered to make a fuss. "Someone will come open it later."

"It'll probably take more than an hour if we were to wait for them," John said.

"We don't have to." Sierra shrugged.

John looked at her, puzzled.

Sierra then looked out at the lawn through the tall window and calmly said, "Mr. Lynch will be the first one to come looking."

As much as she hated to admit it, Nathan would absolutely be the first to come looking if she and John disappeared together. Part of it was because he did not want John getting closer to her. The other part was because he was worried about his "daughter."

"If I was that great, why don't you want to remarry me?" That was what John understood least. "Don't you like me anymore?"

Even if she did not, it did not matter. He could court her again and make her fall for him again.

"It's not that I don't like you." Sierra finally told him the truth. It was one of their rare, honest talks since the divorce. "I'm scared."

John felt his chest tighten.

Sierra took a deep breath and looked out the window, her throat dry and tight. "I know you love me. I also know that if we got remarried, you would treat me just as well. But I also know how far you're willing to go to get what you want."

"I can change," John said.

Sierra looked straight into his eyes and said without hesitation, "But I can't trust that."
