“Go straight ahead. Left, hendell again, fhran night.” Robin had memorized the layout, so he knew exactly where everything
“I’ll go first. Wait over there for Boss.” bance ran off with a miserable expression on his face.
After he found the fire escape, he hurried back up to the second floor and slipped the note from his pocket into the changing
room.
Afraid John might miss it, he even knocked twice.
By the time John picked up the note, Lance was already gone.
[Boss, Ms. Bell, don’t worry. We’ll explain everything to Tommy and make sure he doesn’t worry.]
“Sit down and get some rest,” John said as he crumpled the note into a ball. “I’ll figure out how to get the door open.”
It Sierra had not trusted him enough, then no matter how many excuses or witnesses there were, nothing they had done today would have cleared him of suspicion. The timing of the locked door, the lack of signal in the room, even this note…
It all looked too much like something he would have arranged.
“It’s fine,” Sierra said; understanding what they were trying to do, she could not be bothered to make a fuss. “Someone will come open it later.”
“It’ll probably take more than an hour if we were to wait for them,” John said.
“We don’t have to.” Sierra shrugged.
John looked at her, puzzled.
Sierra then looked out at the lawn through the tall window and calmly said, “Mr. Lynch will be the first one to come looking.”
As much as she hated to admit it, Nathan would absolutely be the first to come looking if she and John disappeared together. Part of it was because he did not want John getting closer to her. The other part was because he was worried about his “daughter.

“True.” John agreed. “He really cares about you.’
”
Sierra gave a quiet nod. She then sat down and did not waste any more energy on it.
“Sierra.” They sat in silence for about five minutes before John walked over and took the seat across from her. “Sierra.”
Sierra looked up.
“Do I seem like that much of a failure to you?” John asked. He wanted to know what was wrong between them and what he
needed to change.
In the past, Pamela had been the reason. But Pamela was already gone and nothing like that would happen again. So why did Sierra still not want to be with him?
“Not much. You just did one thing wrong. Before that, you were a perfect husband and a perfect father to Tommy,” Sierra said calmly. The look in her eyes was filled with so much mixed feelings that even she could not put it into words. “I couldn’t find anyone better than you.”
No one else noticed every shift in her mood the way John did. He understood her even when she said one thing and meant another. He was emotionally so stable back then he barely seemed human, as if all he could do was to love someone in his world.
If Pamela had never happened, Sierra might never have known that John had another side.
“If I was that great, why don’t you want to remarry me?” That was what John understood least. “Don’t you like me anymore?”

Sierra took a deep breath and looked out the window, her throat dry and ght “Tkarn yoom are the alien khoon that if we gon remarried, you would treat me just as well. But I also know how far you’re willing to go to get what you want.”
“Tcan change,” John said.
Sierra looked straight into his eyes and said without hesitation, “But I can’t trust that/
