Nathan let out a mocking laughter at John. "Mr. Henderson, you think too highly of yourself."
John did not react at all. "If I'm with her, I can help her manage the shares she holds in the King and Lynch families and make everyone else give up on trying to get them."
"That sounds so nice." Nathan was determined to go against him. "When the time comes, you'll be the first one trying to take them."
"Aren't you and Mom still around?" John said calmly.
Nathan paused.
"Let's take a step back and say I really am after Sierra's shares," John continued. "With you and Mom around, what could I possibly do? Would you really just stand there and watch me take them from her?"
Nathan narrowed his eyes. "You'd never get the chance."
"Exactly. So if Sierra is with me, I can only ever be her financial advisor. You and Mom would be the ones keeping watch," John said.
Robin was completely lost. He could not understand why John had suddenly started making peace with Mr. Lynch. Just a moment ago, every word between felt like swords. This was too strange!
"Right now, she needs my status to keep other people in line." John sounded completely sincere. "Don't you want to make use of that?"
Of course Nathan did. He alone could not keep everyone in the King and Lynch families under control.
On the surface, those people would not dare do anything major. Behind the scenes, though, every one of them would keep stirring up trouble.
More importantly, some things were not convenient for him to handle himself.
If John stepped in, that problem disappeared. Everyone knew his reputation for ruthless methods and decisive action.
Using John was certainly an option.
"Not to mention that when it comes to how much I care about her, I don't even need to make a hypothetical. I'm already willing to do anything for her." John brought the subject back around. "As long as you don't oppose me in front of outsiders and let them know Sierra is under my protection, I'll take care of the rest."
Nathan looked at him suspiciously, doubt deepening in his eyes. "You can't possibly..."
If this really was cooperation, then they would have to change how they dealt with him from now on.
"When did I ever say that?" John asked.
Robin blinked. Even Lance looked just as confused.
"Weren't you..." Robin could not make sense of it.
"I was only stressing my value to Sierra so he'd weigh the pros and cons." John's thoughts were never easy to read. "I never once mentioned what I could do for him."
With that one sentence, Robin understood.
That meant Nathan would target John less from now on, which meant John had one less obstacle in the way of winning Sierra back.
But Robin did not think about this deep enough. John's real goal was never that simple. He did not just want one less obstacle in his way, he wanted to turn that former obstacle into someone who would push Sierra toward him and help him without even knowing it.
