Chapter 110
“Genevieve called me,” I said, watching Evelyn’s expression tighten with immediate concern. “Screaming, threatening vague retaliation. I’ve reported it to the council, requested increased security for you and Willow.”
“What kind of threats,” Evelyn asked, moving instinctively closer to Willow’s bouncer, protective instinct evident in the gesture.
“Vague,” I said honestly. “Nothing specific, but concerning enough given how unhinged she sounded. I don’t think we should take any chances.”
Evelyn nodded, some of her earlier composure from the confrontation itself giving way now to genuine worry. “Do you think she’d actually try something? Beyond just fabricated accusations and verbal threats?
“I don’t know,” I admitted honestly. “I think she’s genuinely unstable right now, desperate and increasingly unpredictable given everything she’s apparently lost. I don’t want to underestimate that, even if it turns out to be nothing beyond empty, angry words.”
We settled into the living room together, and I found myself unable to fully relax despite Evelyn’s evident safety, checking my phone repeatedly for updates from Callum, my mind cycling through everything that had happened-the recording, the confrontation, Genevieve’s furious, unsettling call.
Sarah arrived within the hour, taking up position near our door with quiet, professional efficiency, and I felt marginally more settled knowing someone capable was actively watching over Evelyn and Willow’s safety.
Callum called later that evening, his voice carrying cautious relief. “The council reviewed the recording, along with your account of her call afterward. They’re dismissing the investigation entirely, actually moving toward assessing whether Genevieve herself poses a threat that needs formal address.”
“Good,” I said, genuine relief flooding through me at the confirmation. “What does that assessment actually involve?”
“They’ll likely call her in for formal questioning, given the recorded admission and the subsequent threatening call,” Callum said. “Depending on how that goes, they might issue a formal restriction preventing her from approaching you, your father, or Evelyn going forward, with genuine consequences if
she violates it.”
“That’s reasonable,” I said, though old wariness remained present despite the relief. “I still want the increased security maintained, at least until we understand exactly how unstable she actually is, whether she poses genuine danger beyond angry, unhinged phone calls.”
“Already planned,” Callum confirmed. “I’ll keep you updated on whatever the council decides.”
I ended the call and found Evelyn watching me with careful, attentive worry, clearly having absorbed most of the conversation from my side of it.

“They’re dismissing the investigation,” I told her. “Moving toward assessing whether Genevieve herself needs formal restriction, given the recording and her threatening call afterward.”
“That’s good news,” Evelyn said, though relief remained tempered by lingering concern. “But you still want the extra security.”
“For now,” I confirmed. “Until we understand exactly how much genuine danger she actually poses, rather than just angry, unstable words.”
Evelyn nodded, moving to check on Willow again, some protective instinct clearly still humming beneath her outward composure despite the day’s ultimately favorable resolution regarding the investigation
itself.
“I’m sorry,” I said, watching her from across the room. “That you had to deal with her directly, that this entire situation put you and Willow at any risk at all.”
“You don’t need to apologize,” Evelyn said, though something grateful crossed her expression at the acknowledgment. “None of this is your fault, Damon. It’s hers, entirely, whatever unresolved grief or entitlement is driving her behavior right now.”
I crossed the room, pulling her into a careful, grateful embrace, holding onto her a little longer than strictly necessary, needing the physical reassurance that she and Willow were both actually safe despite everything that had unfolded throughout this long, tense day.
“Whatever she’s actually capable of,” I said quietly, “I’m not taking any chances with your safety, or Willow’s, or my father’s. We’ll maintain whatever precautions are necessary until this is genuinely, fully
resolved.”
