Chapter 61

Damon pov

I’d assigned Marcus to keep discreet watch on my father starting the same evening Evelyn told me about the doorstep apology, unable to fully shake the instinct that thirty years of a man’s character didn’t simply transform because of two difficult days and a single admission of guilt.

Marcus’s reports over the following days had been consistent, almost frustratingly so-my father staying largely in his study, meeting occasionally with pack elders, no further contact with Evelyn, nothing that raised immediate alarm. Part of me wanted to let the vigilance ease slightly, wanted to believe the change Evelyn had described might actually be settling into something real.

A larger part of me still refused to fully trust it.

I was going over supply files at my desk that afternoon, trying to focus on mundane pack business while some low, persistent unease continued humming beneath the surface, when my phone rang. My mother’s name on the screen made me answer immediately, some old protective instinct rising before I’d even registered why.

“Mom?”

“Damon.” Her voice came through thin and shaking, fear evident in every syllable, and I felt my whole body go rigid with immediate alarm. “I need you to listen to me carefully. Something’s wrong with Marissa.”

“What’s happening.” I was already standing, some instinctive urgency overriding the careful calm I’d been trying to maintain since we arrived back at pack lands.

“She’s been getting worse for days,” my mother said, her voice cracking. “Not sleeping, barely eating. This morning she started talking-Damon, it didn’t make sense. Rambling about things that don’t add up, convinced people are watching the cabin, convinced her baby isn’t safe anywhere. I tried to calm her down and she just kept talking faster, more frantic, like she couldn’t actually hear me at all.”

Cold dread settled into my chest, understanding immediately that whatever was happening to Marissa went beyond simple stress or exhaustion. “Where is she right now?”

“In the bedroom. I got her to lie down, told her I’d get her some water, but Damon, I’m scared. I’ve never seen anyone like this. She’s not making sense, and I don’t know what to do.”

“Is she safe right now? Is she alone?”

“She’s alone in the room, yes, but I’m right outside the door.” My mother’s voice shook further. “I didn’t want to leave her, but I needed to call someone. I don’t know who else to call.”

“You did the right thing calling me,” I said, forcing my own voice to stay steady despite the alarm racing through my system. “Mom, I need you to listen carefully. This sounds like it might be more than something you or I can handle alone. I think she needs actual medical help, someone trained to help with what you’re describing.”

“A doctor,” my mother said, some of the panic in her voice giving way to a kind of desperate relief at having a concrete next step. “You think she needs an actual doctor.”

“I think whatever’s happening might be serious enough that we can’t just wait it out,” I said carefully. “Is there a hospital near where you’re staying? Somewhere you could get her seen quickly?”

“There’s a small clinic in the town nearby. Maybe twenty minutes away.” My mother’s voice steadied slightly, some of her old composure returning now that she had direction. “Should I take her there myself?”

“Yes. Now, if you can manage it safely. Don’t wait.” I was already moving toward the door, grabbing my keys, my

mind racing through logistics even as I kept my voice as calm and reassuring as I could manage for my mother’s sake. “I’m coming too. I can be there in a few hours. Call me the second you’re at the clinic, and call me if anything changes before then.”

“Okay.” A shaky breath on the other end. “Okay, I’ll get her there.”

“Mom.” I paused at the door, needing her to hear this clearly before we hung up. “You did everything/right. Calling me, staying close to her, getting her somewhere safe now. Whatever’s happening, you’re handling this well.”

“I’m terrified, Damon.”
