“Go,” Evelyn said immediately, no hesitation in her voice either. “Damon, go. Whatever’s happening to her, whatever’s happened between us, nobody deserves to go through something like that alone. Make sure she gets help.”

“I don’t know how long I’ll be gone,” I said, torn between the urgency pulling me toward my mother and Marissa, and the instinct that still wanted to stay close to Evelyn and Willow given everything else still unresolved with my father.

“We’ll be fine,” Evelyn said firmly. “Sarah’s here, Callum knows what’s happening. Go be there for your mother. This isn’t a moment to overthink the logistics.”

I crossed the room and kissed her forehead quickly, gratitude and lingering worry both tangled together, before heading out toward the car, my mind already racing four hours ahead toward whatever waited at that small clinic.

The drive felt endless, my mother’s frightened voice looping through my mind the entire way, old memories of Marissa surfacing unbidden-the girl who used to hold my hand through childhood nightmares, who’d been part of my life since before either of us understood what mate bonds or pack politics would eventually cost any of us. Whatever damage she’d caused, whatever unforgivable choices she’d made eight months ago, some old, complicated fondness still lived somewhere in my chest, refusing to fully disappear despite everything.

My mother called again about halfway through the drive, her voice steadier now, though still tight with residual fear. “We’re at the clinic. They’re seeing her now. Damon, the doctor asked a lot of questions, about stress, about the pregnancy, about how she’s been sleeping and eating. I think-I think it’s more than just anxiety. They mentioned bringing in someone with more specific training.”

“That’s good,” I said, meaning it, relief flooding through me at the confirmation that Marissa was finally getting real attention. “That means they’re taking it seriously, Mom. That’s exactly what she needs right now.”

“I should have noticed sooner,” my mother said quietly, guilt evident beneath the words. “She’s been getting worse for days, and I kept telling myself it was just the stress of everything-the pregnancy, being away from everything familiar, your father’s threats hanging over her. I should have called someone sooner.”

“You couldn’t have known how serious it was becoming,” I said gently. “You called the second you understood something was genuinely wrong. That’s what matters.”

I arrived at the clinic almost three hours later, finding my mother in the small waiting room, exhaustion and worry etched into every line of her face. She stood immediately when she saw me, and I pulled her into a brief, tight hug, feeling her shaking slightly against me.

“How is she,” I asked, pulling back to look at her properly.

“Stable, for now. They’ve got her settled, talking with a specialist about what comes next.” My mother’s voice wavered slightly. “They think it might be something related to the stress of everything-the pregnancy, the isolation, everything that’s happened. They want to keep her here for observation, possibly longer term care depending on what they find.”

I nodded slowly, processing everything, some old complicated tangle of guilt and lingering resentment and genuine worry all mixing together in my chest. Whatever Marissa had done, whatever damage she’d caused, watching my mother’s exhausted, frightened face made clear that nobody deserved to spiral through something like this entirely alone, isolated in some cabin far from anyone who might have caught the warning signs sooner.

“We’ll make sure she gets whatever care she actually needs,” I said firmly. “Whatever it costs, whatever it takes. That much I can promise.”

My mother nodded, some of the tension finally easing from her shoulders now that I’d actually arrived, now that the decision no longer rested entirely on her alone.

We sat together in the small waiting room, the fluorescent lights humming quietly overhead, and I pulled out my phone to text Evelyn a brief update, grateful, even in the middle of this fresh crisis, that I had somewhere steady to return to once this particular storm finally settled.

*Marissa’s stable. Getting real care now. Might be here a while. I’ll call you tonight.*

Her response came quickly. *Take the time you need. We’re okay here. Tell your mom I’m glad she called you.*
