Chapter 24
Marco and I decided to have our wedding ceremony in Frandine, two months after Grandpa had his last surgery. I wanted Grandpa to be a part of my happiness.
Although Grandpa still couldn’t stand up on the day of the wedding, he sat in his wheelchair and held my hand before delivering me to Marco.
Our wedding ceremony was a well-kept secret. We only invited a few of our close relatives from the Scapuzzi family and our good friends to join us. To prevent unrelated parties from disrupting our happy day, Marco had even leaked a few fake addresses for our wedding venue.
Apparently, on the day of our wedding, the Farro brothers had raided the fake wedding venues like madmen. They had brought their men and weapons with them, wanting to steal me away.
However, they couldn’t find even a hint of my shadow no matter how hard they searched.
In the end, Stefano and Salvatore got into an accident while they were arguing. One of them passed away, while the other suffered severe injuries. [1
But none of that mattered to me anymore. With the priest as our witness, Marco and I exchanged vows and rings before we shared a kiss.
Once the ceremony came to an end, no one could ever separate me and Marco from that day forth.
When we returned home, the housekeeper informed me that I had received a package from an anonymous sender. The sender had also included a letter with the package.
I opened the letter and laid eyes on elegant handwriting that I hadn’t seen in more than a decade.
“Wishing you happiness-Mom.”
Although there were only four words in the letters, I couldn’t stop the tears from spilling down my cheeks. It turned out that Mom had always been watching over me.
The package consisted of local items from all over the world, such as magnolias from Cosara, maple syrup from Enerallo, lanolin from Aurion, and more. The variety of items was Mamma’s way of telling me that she had lived a free and happy life in the past few years.
I didn’t ask the housekeeper where the sender of the package had gone, and I also didn’t ask anyone to track down Mom’s
whereabouts.
I knew that even though she missed me, compared to returning to the Scapuzzis and living with me again, she preferred a carefree life where she wasn’t tied down by anything.
I was grateful to her for giving birth to me and for teaching me how to be brave to chase after everything that I wanted.
I just couldn’t stop the tears from streaming down my face.
Marco was startled when he saw my tears, and he hurried over to comfort me. He wasn’t aware of how tightly he was hugging me, behaving as if he was worried I would leave him, just like how Mom left me.
I cradled the letter close to me as I leaned against his chest. I asked jokingly, “What if there comes a day where I want to chase after my freedom just like Mom?”
Marco was silent for a moment before he leaned down and kissed my forehead.
