The night was calm, the gentle hum of crickets blending with the soft breeze that rustled through the trees surrounding the packhouse. Winter had finally fallen asleep in her bassinet, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm. Louis, exhausted from an afternoon of play, had curled up in his bed hours ago. Everything seemed perfect-until the call came.

I had just finished tidying up when a warrior burst through the front door, his face pale, breathless. My heart clenched.

“Luna-it’s the Alpha!”

I dropped the cloth in my hands, my stomach twisting into a knot. “What happened?”

“He was attacked at the northern border. A rogue ambush. He’s injured but stable. They’re bringing him to the pack hospital now.”

The world blurred for a moment. Zander. My mate. The father of my children. My knees nearly gave out, but I forced myself to stay strong. My babies needed me. He needed me.

“Stay with my children,” I instructed the warrior before I grabbed a shawl and sprinted out into the cold night.

The pack hospital was buzzing with activity when I arrived. Wolves murmured in hushed voices, concerned for their Alpha. I pushed past them, my heart pounding as I rushed to his room. When I stepped inside, the breath whooshed out of me.

Zander lay on the bed, his upper body bare, bandages wrapped tightly around his chest. His face was pale, a deep gash on his shoulder, bruises littering his skin. But his eyes-the moment they met mine, warmth spread through me. He was alive.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he rasped, attempting a smirk but failing. “You just had our baby.”

Tears welled in my eyes as I sat beside him, taking his hand. “And you almost didn’t make it home to see he grow up. What were you thinking, Zander? You just left without telling me!”

He exhaled, his grip tightening on mine. “The rogues were pushing in too close. I had to protect our land, ou people.”

I swallowed past the lump in my throat and nodded. I understood my mate’s duty as an Alpha, but that didn’t make it any easier to accept.

The doctor entered and smiled reassuringly. “He’ll be fine, Luna. The wounds are deep but healing well. He just needs rest.”

Relief washed over me, but my glare didn’t waver. “Rest, huh? Something he’s terrible at.”

Zander chuckled softly. “You’ll keep me in line, won’t you?”

“Damn right I will,” I whispered, pressing my forehead against his.

Bringing Zander home was a challenge. He grumbled the whole time, refusing to be carried, refusing help.

Louis was the first to rush to him when we stepped inside. “Daddy!” He threw his little arms around Zander’s leg, making him wince slightly. “You got boo-boos?”

Zander ruffled his son’s dark hair. “Just a few, champ. Nothing your mom can’t fix.”

Winter let out a tiny wail from her bassinet, and I hurried to scoop her up, holding her close as I swayed.

“See? I have two babies to take care of now,” I teased, glancing at Zander.

“I am not a baby,” he argued, making Louis giggle.

The next few days were exhausting. Between nursing Winter, playing with Louis, and making sure Zander actually rested, I hardly got a moment to breathe. He was restless, hating every second of being bedridden.

One afternoon, I caught him trying to get out of bed.

“Zander!”

He froze, caught in the act. “I was just stretching.”

“You were trying to escape.”

He sighed dramatically. “Serene, I’m fine. I can walk.”

I folded my arms. “Sit. Down.”

He smirked, his eyes twinkling. “Are you Alpha now?”

“In this house? Absolutely.”

Louis giggled from his spot on the floor, where he was playing with his toy wolves. “Mama is boss!”

Zander groaned. “You’ve turned my own son against me.”

I walked over, adjusting his pillows and sitting beside him. “I just want you to heal properly. I need you he Zander. Fully. Our children need you.”

He softened, reaching for my hand. “I know, love. I’m sorry for worrying you.”

Winter stirred in my arms, letting out a tiny sigh before settling back to sleep. I smiled, brushing a kiss to her forehead. “She already adores you, you know? She kept looking at your empty spot the night you were gone.”

His jaw clenched, guilt flashing across his features. “I won’t put myself in danger like that again. Not recklessly. I swear it.”

I knew he meant it. Zander was strong, but he was also a father now. He had a family to return to.

The following days, he let me care for him without protest. I helped him change his bandages, made sure he ate, and sometimes we’d just sit together, holding our children, basking in the warmth of our family.

One evening, as we sat outside, Louis climbed onto Zander’s lap, curling against him. “When you feel better, will you play with me again, Daddy?”
