Louis’s first day of school was a whirlwind of emotions for all of us. Winter had just turned six months old, and I was still adjusting to balancing life as a mother of two while ensuring that everything in the pack ran smoothly. The morning started with chaos, as expected. Louis was unusually quiet while I helped him into his tiny school uniform, a navy-blue polo shirt and beige trousers. His small fingers fidgeted with the hem of his shirt as he sat on the edge of his bed.

“You okay, sweetheart?” I asked, kneeling in front of him.

Louis still seemed unconvinced, so I cupped his small face in my hands. “Sweetheart, I know it’s a little scary because it’s something new. But remember how you were scared to swim the first time? And then you loved it?”

“School is just like that. New at first, but you’ll grow to love it. And I promise, we’ll be right here when you come home.”

With that, I kissed his forehead and helped him into his tiny sneakers. Winter gurgled happily in Zander’s her little hands reaching for her big brother as if offering support in her own way.

Once everyone was ready, we headed to the car. The drive to the school wasn’t long, but it felt like an eternit Louis held my hand the entire time, and I didn’t mind one bit.

When we arrived, the school was buzzing with children and parents saying their goodbyes. The sight of so many unfamiliar faces made Louis squeeze my hand tighter.

“Louis, look!” Zander pointed toward the playground. “There’s the jungle gym you love.”

Louis’s eyes lit up for a moment, but his grip on my hand didn’t loosen.

A cheerful teacher approached us, her warm smile instantly calming my nerves. “You must be Louis! We’ve been so excited to meet you.”

Louis shyly nodded, glancing up at me.

“You’re going to have so much fun,” the teacher continued. “And guess what? We have painting today! Do you like painting?”
