237 Chapter 287
287.Chapter 287
Stella’s voice came through.
Sophia’s grip on her phone tightened. A bitter ache rose from deep inside her, swelling until it caught in her
throat.
Seeing Sophia stay silent, Stella’s lips curled into a smug smile. She said, ‘Ms. Roth, if there’s nothing else, l just hang up.”
Sophia held onto her phone, but after Stella hung up, her hand fell weakly to her side.
She didn’t even notice when her phone slipped from her hand.
Tears streamed down her face in silence. She bit down hard on her lip, trying desperately to hold back the sobs, but the weight of her emotions crashed over her like a wave, leaving her gasping for air.
She berated herself, ‘Sophia, you’re so pathetic. Why do you always fall for a man’s sweet words so easily? You are hurt by the same person again and again, left in pieces every single time.
You keep falling for Easton’s gentle lies, over and over.
‘It was like this more than ten years ago, and nothing has changed since.’
Sophia looked out at the moonlit night and let out a bitter laugh at herself.
She tried to pull herself together, got up, and headed to the bathroom. Fever or not, nothing sobered her up like cold water.
After freshening up, Sophia grabbed some fever meds from her nightstand, popped a pill, shut off her phone, and crawled into bed.
After tonight, she was done clinging to the past.
At Crestview Group, Sophia sat in her office, handling compensation for the port project clients. Even though the project was on hold, she couldn’t let Crestview’s reputation take a hit over this mess, so she made sure every client was properly compensated.
She’d already burned through all the funds she could get her hands on, but the problem still wasn’t solved. The board would be breathing down her neck soon.
The news of Edward and Julian being hospitalized was splashed across every news outlet in Jenston, and Crestview was sinking even deeper into trouble.
Annie called to tell Sophia that Edward had woken up, but Sophia couldn’t leave the office. The board was holding an emergency meeting, and as vice president, she had to be there.
Annie reassured her, “Don’t worry, I’m at the hospital. I’ve got everything covered here.”
In the conference room, the board members were quick to blame Sophia, accusing her of mishandling everything and of keeping the CEO’s coma under wraps.
Their anger was palpable. They demanded that Sophia come up with a fix in three days.
If she couldn’t, they’d vote to kick her out as vice president, force Crestview into bankruptcy and liquidation, and even push the Roth family to hurry up and sell off Crestview’s assets so they could all cut ties and walk
away.
Sophia didn’t blame them for being cold or ruthless; she just hated her own helplessness.
After the meeting, Sophia headed back to her office.
That’s when Frank, fresh off his trip from Evaris, called and asked if she was free to meet up tonight.
Sophia didn’t say no. Hayes Group was one of the port project’s clients, and since she was the supplier, she figured she should explain things to Fran! face-to-face

At the Summit Hotel, Frank had arrived early and was waiting for her. When Sophia walked in, he immediately pulled out a chair for her.
“Sophia, you’ve lost weight,” Frank said, concern clear in his voice.
Sophia gave a faint smile and said, “I’m fine.”
“I’m really sorry I had to make a last-minute trip to Evaris for business. If I’d been here when Crestview ran into trouble, I could’ve helped,” Frank said, his eyes filled with concern and heartache as he looked at her.
Sophia poured Frank a cup of water and said, “Frank, I appreciate your kindness, but Crestview’s problems are really the Roth family’s responsibility. Honestly, no one, not even you, has any obligation to help us.”
