Wrapped in the thick bathrobe, Yvette felt significantly safer.

After quickly finishing her skincare routine, she checked her phone. It was still early.

She couldn't sleep, so she grabbed a book and propped herself up against the headboard to read.

Whether it was reading or working, the moment Yvette focused on something, she easily lost track of the world around her.

She didn't even notice when Jabez pushed the door open and walked in.

"Why are you resigning?"

The man's deep, resonant voice drifted into her ears, and Yvette finally looked up. Only then did she realize Jabez was in the room.

Seeing her momentarily blank expression, Jabez raised an eyebrow.

So he had never once considered that she would actually quit her job. The realization sent a sharp pang of bitterness through Yvette's chest.

She hadn't orchestrated the incident where he was drugged. Their sleeping together had been a genuine, horrible accident. At first, she had never intended to use it to blackmail him. But then the Yeats Family faced imminent bankruptcy, which would have buried them under hundreds of millions in debt! It was a catastrophic disaster for her family.

At the time, the only person who could save the Yeats Family was Jabez Shelby. To pull her family from the fire, she had gone to the Shelbys and told Sybil exactly what happened that night. That was the only reason they got married.

"I don't have the background for it anyway."

She had only gotten into the Shelby Group through blatant nepotism because she only had a bachelor's degree. Literally anyone else working at the Shelby Group had a master's degree or higher. She didn't even meet the basic requirements for an interview.

Jabez only agreed to let her be his secretary because Sybil forced his hand. She originally thought that if they worked in the same building and commuted together, they might eventually develop some real feelings for one another.

Instead, Jabez strictly forbade her from getting close to him, banned her from his personal office, and rarely ever took her to corporate events.

Jabez nodded, not pressing the issue further. It was as if his question had just been a fleeting moment of idle curiosity.

The room descended into a suffocating silence.

Yvette found it incredibly strange that he wasn't leaving the room.

Jabez pulled back the covers, lay down on the bed, and naturally wrapped his arm around her slender waist. His large, searing-hot palm began sliding upward.

Yvette panicked, terrified that in his aggressive state, Jabez might accidentally hurt the baby in her stomach. She instantly lashed out, kicking hard at his legs.

But he was clearly anticipating it and effortlessly dodged the strike.

*Ring... Ring... Ring...*

Jabez glanced at the caller ID on his phone. He immediately released her and pulled away from the bed.

"Hello?"

Yvette could faintly hear Willow's soft, delicate voice coming through the receiver. She didn't know what the person on the other end said, but Jabez's face instantly tightened with worry, his lips pressing into a thin line.

"Wait for me. I'm on my way."

Without another word, Jabez turned and walked out, never once looking back.

Yvette was left alone, the faint, lingering scent of his cold cologne the only proof he had even been there.
