The room was already empty; his figure was nowhere to be seen.

A mocking smile pulled at the corners of her lips.

She mocked herself. Protecting her unborn child relied entirely on Jabez's absolute devotion to Willow.

Pushing the thought away, she returned to bed.

Jabez never came back that night.

...

After grabbing a quick breakfast, Yvette arrived at the Shelby Group. She settled at her desk and began organizing files.

There was a business lunch scheduled with Mr. Calder from a tech company. Seeing that it was already past the agreed time and there was still no sign of Jabez, Yvette started to feel anxious.

Corbin walked over and casually dropped a bomb. "Mr. Shelby is busy. The lunch with Mr. Calder has been pushed to this evening."

Hearing this, Yvette's hands paused mid-motion.

Busy? After Willow had called him yesterday, he hadn't returned home all night. And now he wasn't even showing up for work?

Anyone who knew Jabez knew how strictly professional he was. He never allowed even the slightest margin for error. She recalled when she had first become his secretary; she used to work overtime and study until the early hours of the morning just to excel at her job. His company had a vast reach, and to ensure she did her job perfectly, she bought and read every book she could find related to their operations. Skipping meals was a regular occurrence, and her unhealthy eating habits had eventually left her with chronic stomach issues.

Once she had been in so much pain that she blacked out, collapsing heavily onto the floor. It was a passing colleague who had helped her up.

When Jabez walked by, he merely tossed out a cold remark, "If you're unwell, go to the hospital. Don't delay the company's progress."

She constantly reminded herself that as the leader of the company, he had to prioritize corporate interests and the bigger picture. But she still couldn't help the aggrieved tears that welled up in her eyes. He had walked away without ever noticing. Or perhaps he simply didn't care.

Now, at the slightest hint of trouble from Willow, Jabez acted like the sky was falling.

The moment he arrived, he locked himself in his office to tackle the towering pile of documents, completely skipping lunch.

Evening arrived.

Jabez stepped out of his office in a navy blue suit. With his striking, impossibly handsome face, tall stature, broad shoulders, and narrow waist, he exuded the commanding presence of a mature man.

Catching sight of his breathtaking looks, Diana's breath hitched for a second. "Mr. Shelby is so gorgeous."

Yvette glanced at him and calmly looked away. Jabez had everything—old money, movie-star looks, and the kind of build that made people stare. She wasn't surprised by Diana's reaction at all.

"Mm."

Noticing her indifferent attitude toward their boss, Diana tactfully dropped the subject.

"Come with me to see Mr. Calder," Jabez said as he walked past Yvette.
