Sybil let out a heavy, furious huff, but there was absolutely nothing she could do to stop Jabez.
"Today is your birthday banquet. We're here to celebrate, so let's not dwell on anything unpleasant," Yvette said softly, trying to smooth things over. "The birthday dinner is being served."
Sybil's voice remained unyielding. "Yvette, I am going to announce your identity today, no matter what."
"Sybil, Jabez isn't even here. If you announce it now, we'll only become the laughingstock of the room," Yvette pointed out calmly.
Every single person in this room was a shrewd, calculating player in the corporate world.
Even if the matriarch declared her as Mrs. Shelby, without Jabez there to acknowledge and back her up, it would be pointless.
Outsiders would instantly see through the facade of their marriage and realize Mr. Shelby couldn't care less about his wife.
If that happened, she would become nothing more than cheap gossip for high society.
Sybil knew full well that in their circle, countless marriages looked perfect on paper while both parties lived entirely separate lives behind closed doors.
"Sybil, let the kids handle their own matters. We shouldn't interfere," Helen, Yvette's grandmother, finally spoke up, her patience wearing thin.
She had arrived at the banquet full of joy, eager to reunite with her old friend.
But witnessing her granddaughter's humiliating predicament had entirely wiped out her good mood.
She had always known Jabez didn't love Yvette, but she never imagined he wouldn't even be willing to put on a basic public performance. Abandoning the banquet the exact moment Yvette's identity was supposed to be revealed was a blatant, unapologetic rejection.
Hearing her oldest friend call her by her first name, Sybil's eyes stung with tears. Only Helen could speak to her with that kind of familiarity anymore. Yet the Shelby family was utterly failing her dear friend's granddaughter.
A crushing wave of shame washed over the older woman.
"Sybil, I know you want what's best for Yvette, but if you truly care for her, you need to listen to what she actually wants," Helen said, her heartache for her granddaughter impossible to hide.
Whenever Yvette visited home, she only shared the good news and buried the bad. She seemed soft-spoken, but deep down, she was incredibly fiercely independent.
Once she made up her mind, absolutely nothing could change it.
But now, with her eyes curved in genuine relief, it was impossible to look away from her.
Milton's heart skipped a sudden, unexpected beat.
Suddenly, the rich smell of a seafood dish hit the table. Yvette's stomach violently flipped. Clamping a hand over her mouth, she bolted up from her chair and practically ran out of the room.
Sybil instantly noticed. The defeated gloom in her eyes vanished, replaced by a sudden spark of absolute brilliance.
*Is Yvette pregnant?*
"Wynne, hurry up and follow—" Before Sybil could even finish her sentence, Matthew Sutton had already pushed his chair back and hurried after Yvette.
Seeing Matthew step in, Wynne leaned back comfortably in her chair. "Matthew's got it."
Helen's face darkened, instantly realizing how little the Shelbys actually cared for her granddaughter. Her eyes narrowed with sharp displeasure.
Sybil shot Wynne a blistering glare. "When I tell you to go check on her, you go check on her!"
