Yvette nodded, pulling out the files she had prepared in advance.
Taking a few steps forward, Jabez glanced back at Diana. "You come too."
Diana pointed at herself in disbelief. "Me?"
He gave a barely perceptible frown and nodded.
Yvette paused for a moment. This project was one Sybil had specifically assigned her to oversee. Otherwise, given Jabez's temperament, he would never take her out for socializing.
And now, Diana was allowed to tag along, only a few days in. It seemed he couldn't wait for her to resign.
Plus, he didn't want to meet a client alone with her, clearly afraid of making Willow jealous.
Diana jogged up next to Yvette, staring at Jabez's back with stars in her eyes.
He tossed the keys to Yvette. "You drive."
As Yvette opened the car door and was about to slide in, she spotted a compact mirror and lipstick resting on the center console. The car also smelled of a faint, sickeningly sweet perfume.
It didn't take a genius to know they belonged to Willow.
It felt like acid had been poured down her throat, burning her insides with a searing ache.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Diana noticed her staring at the console and asked, "What's wrong?"
Pulling her thoughts together, Yvette bent down and got into the car. "Nothing."
Jabez sat in the back.
The ride was dead silent. They arrived at the agreed location and headed into the private room.
Mr. Calder was already waiting inside. Seeing them arrive, he quickly stood up.
"My apologies, Mr. Calder. Something unexpected came up this morning."
Though Jabez was apologizing, his face showed absolutely no remorse.
Given his status, Mr. Calder didn't dare fault him and laughed amicably. "You're a busy man, Mr. Shelby. Completely understandable."
Wearing her professional smile, Yvette gestured toward Diana. "Mr. Calder, this is Ms. Diana. She'll be taking over my responsibilities moving forward."
As soon as the words left her mouth, both the client and Jabez stared at her.
"Ms. Yeats, our project is almost at the finish line. Could you stick around until it's officially wrapped up?"
Mr. Calder had tremendous respect for her capabilities. To become head secretary at the Shelby Group in just two short years spoke volumes about her talent. He felt uneasy about suddenly swapping her out for an inexperienced newcomer.
Yvette didn't answer right away, her gaze shifting to Jabez.
His pitch-black eyes gave away nothing. He stayed silent, leaving the choice entirely up to her.
Mr. Calder pressed on, "This project is our shared labor. I know you'd hate to walk away from it now."
Hearing this, Yvette’s eyes flickered. "Alright, until the project is finished."
Mr. Calder nodded in satisfaction, while no one noticed the awkwardness radiating from Diana.
Diana knew that despite not having a professional background in the field, Yvette had executed the project flawlessly. But she didn't think she was any worse. The client hadn't even given her a chance before writing her off entirely. Wasn't that a little unfair?
Still, she kept her frustration hidden.
The dinner wrapped up. Mr. Calder left in his chauffeured car, and Diana hailed a cab home.
Suddenly, it was just Jabez and Yvette left standing there.
