"Let's go." Jabez stepped toward the car.

It was already past ten o'clock, and Yvette's car was still at the office. There was no point in making things harder for herself.

This time, Jabez took the wheel. Yvette turned her head to stare out the window.

In the past, being alone with him would have made her heart race with butterflies. She used to constantly search for things they had in common to talk about, only for him to brush her off every single time.

She used to naively dream that it was all just a misunderstanding, and once it was cleared up, they would finally live happily together.

But now, she wasn't foolish enough to believe he could ever fall for her. For the first time, she made no effort to start a conversation.

Jabez didn't seem to notice anything out of the ordinary. He had no intention of speaking either.

The phone resting on the center console pinged with a notification. Whoever it was must have noticed he wasn't replying and decided to call instead.

He picked up.

Yvette couldn't hear what the person on the other end was saying, but she recognized the sound of a woman's voice.

His expression instantly tensed up.

"Something came up. Go back by yourself."

Hearing his cold, indifferent tone, Yvette's clear eyes widened in sheer disbelief. They had dined in the suburbs. The city center was still an hour's drive away!

Not to mention, it was eleven o'clock at night. She was a young woman out here alone—did he seriously have zero concern for her safety?

"You..."

The car pulled over to the side of the road.

Seeing she hadn't moved, he turned to her. The sheer callousness in his eyes stung her deeply. "Get out."

The second she opened the door, the freezing wind slammed into her. She pulled her thin top tighter around herself, though it hardly helped.

Her face paled as a sudden, sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen. She stumbled and nearly fell, managing to catch her balance just in time.

Her pregnancy wasn't stable. If she had fallen, she could have miscarried. She was in the middle of nowhere. An accident here could cause severe, irreversible damage to her body.

She finally realized just how stupid she used to be. If a man doesn't love you, seven years won't change a thing. A lifetime wouldn't either.

Charlotte swore the entire drive back. She kept glancing sideways at Yvette, her eyes brimming with undeniable heartache.

It was the dead of night by the time they got home. Thankfully, after resting, the pain in Yvette’s stomach faded away.

"Yvette, are you hungry? Do you want to eat something?" Charlotte asked gently.

When someone's feeling down, comfort food usually helps lift their spirits.

Yvette shook her head, grabbed her clean clothes, and went into the bathroom.

*Ding.*

Her phone, resting on the shelf, chimed. She picked it up and saw a message from the obstetrics department she had booked earlier.

[Ms. Yeats, your appointment number has been called. If you are available, please come to the hospital tomorrow for an evaluation. If everything looks fine, we can schedule the abortion immediately.]
