The door was immediately forced open again, and Jabez grabbed Yvette's wrist, hauling her out of the room.
Yvette struggled a few times, but the man didn't let go; if anything, his grip tightened.
"I'll pay you."
Hearing that, Yvette stopped struggling. Nobody argued with money.
She looked down at her wrist, still wrapped in the man's large hand.
For seven years of marriage, she had always been the one initiating contact. He had always been freezing cold, completely unwilling to engage in any physical intimacy with her.
Now that they finally had their divorce papers and she couldn't care less about him, he was suddenly initiating contact.
Jabez's study had always been forbidden territory to her. She was never allowed to set foot inside.
If it hadn't been for the freak storm trapping them together, she probably never would have gotten the chance to see it in this lifetime.
To think she was finally entering it under these circumstances—it was somewhat laughable.
"I don't have a laptop."
"There's one in the study."
The two of them walked in. The room was decorated in his typical black, white, and gray aesthetic. One entire wall was covered by a bookshelf, crammed with books of every genre.
Jabez sat down in his leather desk chair. His laptop was already open and running.
Yvette sat on the other side of the desk and took the secondary laptop he handed her.
"Ready?" Jabez asked, looking over at her.
"Ready."
Jabez switched on his webcam. Yvette hadn't realized it was a video conference and immediately shifted her chair further out of frame.
Noticing her movement, Jabez shot her a glance but kept his expression neutral.
The meeting began.
Yvette hadn't touched this type of material in two or three months, but she was deeply familiar with Shelby Group's projects. Given her extreme competence, she fell back into the rhythm effortlessly.
Beside her, Jabez's eyes swept over her screen. Seeing that she was easily keeping up with his train of thought, he accelerated the pace of the meeting.
Two hours later, as the meeting was drawing to a close, Jabez reached for his water glass.
