"She's running a fever. Do we have medicine?"

"Yes, I'll find it right now." Lena efficiently pulled the medical kit from a cabinet and began digging through it.

"Here's some Ibuprofen."

"Give it to me." Jabez took the pills, poured a glass of water, and hurried back upstairs.

Yvette had kicked off the blankets, and the hem of her pajama shirt had ridden up, exposing a strip of pale, slender waist.

Jabez pulled her shirt back down, propped her up against his chest, and lightly patted her cheek.

"Yvette. Yvette."

The woman didn't react at all, causing his brow to furrow.

He kept one arm wrapped tightly around her shoulders to keep her from slumping over while trying to pop the pills out of the blister pack with his other hand, but the woman in his arms was completely limp.

She nearly slid right out of his grasp onto the floor. With a frustrated sigh, Jabez laid her back down on the bed, popped the pill out, and tried to slip it between her lips.

The bitter taste of the medicine flooded Yvette's mouth. Her brow pinched together, and she slowly forced her eyes open.

"You're awake. Take this." Jabez held the glass of water to her lips.

Yvette's head felt like it was splitting open. "I..."

Her throat felt as if it were coated in razor blades. Just forcing out a single word was agonizing, so she shut her mouth.

Her mind cleared just enough to realize she had a fever.

"The pill is in your mouth. Drink the water."

Hearing the word 'pill', Yvette's heart skipped a beat, and she immediately spat it out.

Pregnant women couldn't just take any random medication; it could cause fetal abnormalities or worse.

Fighting through the agonizing pain in her throat, she rasped, "What did you just give me?"

"Ibuprofen," Jabez replied, his brow tightly knit. "There's a massive storm raging outside right now. You're running a high fever, and we can't get you to a hospital. You need to take this to bring your temperature down."

Yvette's throat burned, her head throbbed, and her entire body ached.

She didn't want to say another word. She just shook her head furiously, refusing to take it.

Jabez's frown deepened so harshly it could have crushed a fly. He pushed the cup toward her again. "Drink some water."
