"Alright, I get it," Milton nodded, gently laying her back down. "Go to sleep for now. I'll take you to see her in a few days."
"Okay." Nola laid perfectly still under the covers.
"But don't tell anyone else about her, okay?" Milton raised a finger to his lips in a 'shush' motion.
"Got it! I can keep a secret."
"Time to sleep. Goodnight, sweetheart." Milton pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Goodnight, Daddy."
Milton walked back to his master bedroom. He pulled out his phone, staring at the number on the screen, hesitating for a long time.
After a brief internal struggle, he finally hit dial.
"Hello?"
Yvette's clear, crisp voice filtered through the speaker.
"It's me, Milton."
She paused for a second before replying, "Yeah, I know."
Milton suddenly remembered caller ID existed and rubbed his nose awkwardly.
"Are you free in three days?" Fearing she might misunderstand his intentions, he quickly added, "Nola wants to see you."
After asking, his grip on the phone tightened slightly.
"Sure," Yvette said. After that, silence hung over the line.
She pulled the phone away from her ear to check the screen. The call was still connected.
"Hello? Milton? I said sure, did you catch that?"
"Yeah, I heard you." His voice carried a softness he didn't even notice himself. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight," Yvette replied.
The call ended, and immediately after, a text message popped up.
[Dear Passenger, this is a reminder for your flight on September 8th. With 4 days until departure, please ensure your travel documents are in order, prepare your luggage, and check the weather for your destination.]
A chilly night breeze drifted through the open window. Yvette stood there, staring blankly at the neon city lights outside.
Only when her eyes began to sting did she finally turn around and begin packing her bags.
